Icelandic Chickens

Well, all we got was wind and we could see the lightning up north by Laree's house.

A cat or something got one of my 2 week old Ameraucanas. Why couldn't it have been one of the little TJ's leghorn roos?

I *think* all the birds are still in the yard. The dogs are locked up to prevent losses by dog slobber.

I am off! I have lots of things to fix, chickens to herd, children to wrangle.

Gosh Laree, that had to be some heavy duty wind!!!!! I hope all the chickens are okay.

Michelle.......with those eggs in a car accident, I'm surprised you have any in lockdown.

My broody is on lockdown, due to hatch her babies Monday. (not icelandics though) It was 100 degrees here yesterday, so I put a water dish by her nest so she could cool off.

Pretty girl Asta on the transferred eggs Friday morning:

Of the twelve transferred from the incubator on day 17, ten hatched, one chick found dead half out of shell in the nest, eggtopsy on other egg showed fully developed dead chick that did not absorb yolk.

Guess what? We don't even have the car back yet! Michael picked it up Friday but it was making a horrible grinding noise so back to the shop. He is afraid to dive it so we are making them tow it back. We are hovering around $10,000.00 in damage at this point! Who would have know that eggs could be shipped, incubated and hatch before the car could be fixed. Good grief.

Holy Wow! Sounds like there's been a lot going on down there.

Mahonri, sorry for the loss

Laree, I'd be there to help if I could, sending good coop building vibes

Mary, sorry to hear about the car, I thought you would have had it back by now.

Beautiful pictures everyone (except Laree, yours just look like work

The temporary coop was great when everyone was younger. Now that they are maturing (and much bigger) they take up too much room, feel too crowded, and have decided to make other arrangements for roosting for the night

I feel like I should be posting daily pics of "This is what they tried to get away with tonight". The past few nights it's been various Icelandics up in the trees behind the temporary coop, last night it was 2 turkeys on the roof of the coop and 3 Icelandics in the trees while about a dozen other chickens just flat refused to be herded, tossed or coerced into the coop. And, of course, we'd been up since 3am cause we went fishing, so we were in no mood for "53 chicken pick-up"

I am sooooo looking forward to the barn being complete so everyone has plenty of room, then maybe they will all go in and get ready for bed when they are supposed to.
