Icelandic Chickens

Orangier is totally a word. As is orangetastic and aboranginable

I can't really say because all my Icelandics run together but I do have some black hens with light neck feathering, four in fact. So what you are saying it that this color/pattern is not "orangier"?

Beautiful chicks BTW.

I see hints of mottling on face. Chick looks to have black background with the orange / reddish overtones. He does look orangish and with my birds, such chicks grow up mostly black with brownish, reddish to yellowish streaks especially on hackles. Such chicks tend to have black siblings as well.

How many times do Icelandics brood in a year? And How many eggs can they sit on? BTW I like the video.

Hard question, some never, some continuously (yes, I am talking about you, Lukka!). I haven't let them sit on more than about eight because they are smaller hens. They will steal as many as they can get though and other hens will gladly donate, so you have to mark their eggs and take the "extras" out. I have only had one Icelandic broody in the two+ years I have head them until recently when five took up the cause.

Gratuitous pic of grandson leaving to play a round of golf this morning. They leave for home Thursday morning.
