Icelandic Chickens

NannaD'sCrazyCoop :

I have been on here for HOURS now - just made it to 100 and I think Isi is the best and most handsome roo I've ever seen or heard of! You are so very blessed!
BTW do you realize there's over 800+ postings that I still have to go through to catch up!

I'm not sure what's more addicting the Icelandic Chickens or the pics and narratives...Whichever the case, I am addicted...I feel like I know each of you; I've watched your posts anxiously as if I were the one experiencing the event. I've laughed and cried. This is the best forum ever. I just adore Ingrid and her tenacity to hold true to the breed and for Mary - for being that "1" that never gave up and made this possible. You have touched many - most you may never know about. Well I have days/weeks/months worth of posts to catch up on. Love and Blessings, hopefully will catch up soon

Welcome aboard Nanna! Like you, I've been catching up on this thread since I read post #1 several weeks ago. Never got pass page 2 until last week when I came across Buck 'N Run website. Made the connection that B'NR and this Icelandic thread are by the one and only Warden! Ever since, I'm stuck to this thread exclusively. Love the work the Mary, other Mary, Kathy and...the list goes on have done and the passion in giving these birds a wonderful home.

Craigslist here has a post for 2 pairs of Icelandic chickens.
Price has dropped from $100/pr to $75/pr.

Maybe if I wait long enough it will go to $50 for the pair?

Hi Lynn !

Welcome to the thread !

They are well worth having, what do you have in chickens now ? The ones on CL, are they adults, young birds, started ? I wouldnt sell an adult pair that low, started maybe, chicks too high. But thats just me, if adult that would mean I thought enough of them to raise them out. That counts for a LOT. Especially roos, I like to keep mine and grown them on before sorting, I want a high roo to hen ratio, but even so I am going to be rehoming some very nice ones next week because they are over what I want to keep.

I know that there are list members in Tenn, but chicks can be shipped easy enough plus eggs. I'd continue looking, and reading.

We had a cold frost this morn, all the garden is pretty limp, makes it easier to see the squash and pumpkins this way though.

Got a busy morn packing, and will see what else the day brings forth, we are on the right side of the Bell Curve now for the trip !

I got an email through my website from someone in Indiana looking for an Icelandic pullet or two. If anyone knows who they might contact please let me know.

I took a head count the other day of my Icelandic babies and ten are white and won't be making the move to the free range area. I already have four white girls down there and if I add ten more I might as well send invitations to the hawks. When their Mamas are done with them they will go to Farmer Fred, even the pullets. He can breed them and get some beautiful colors. I am going to try to cap my adult population at thirty. Any more than that and the coop cleaning is too much for me.

Gotta go. Off to the post office and feed store. I gotta stop giving so much scratch. Sheesh, everyone eats it, chickens, goats, and emus.

Hi Mary

The pic of blind Lucy with the emu chick is a classic, that ones gotta go in your book !!!

You have so many really great Icelandic photos that you really do need to do a book ! Add in some of the others for more humor and to round out the general homestead value of the breed. I'll take a dozen copies, can I get them in two weeks??

I would like 30 hens, but way more eggs then we can eat, I am thinking 18-20 for me, and can retire and rehome some of the hens early and replace with youngers, I want to concentrate on diversity, laying production, maternal ability, hardiness and ranging ability, and other traits as I come up with, ranging ability sure does effect feed intake. I dont have any all white Icelandics now, maynot well have any, I am going to a predator rich area. The chipmunks may become the most seen at the O'Levi homestead.

Next year I do for sure want to add some feathered leg pullets. And see how they do in the Wa winters.

Good Morning Jake, Mary, and all....

Mary, you take it easy today.

Dry socket is miserable, and you sure don't want that.

Jake, I sure hope you aren't working yourself into exhaustion. Take care of yourself. I am so excited for you and the adventure that lies ahead. I can hardly wait to see all the pictures.

I am capping off with the Icelandics I have now, too. I believe I have 4 males and 15 females. I have 2 pens for them. Did not get done what I wanted done this year.... maybe next spring..... I wanna fence in an acre or so just for the Icelandics. Soooo much to do, so little time.

I was looking at some old (chicken) pictures last night and was wishing I had kept some of the unique looking Icelandics I had. Oh well, can't keep them all.

Our baby, Brittney, is 21 today. (Worse than that, her oldest brother is 39!) My, how time flies.

Have a great day everyone!

Edited to add:
Can you help me here?.......... (NOTE: #2 is Icelandic chicks)
