Yup !! I saw that, you know what you need to know, you're a fast study! It will work out for you
Barn cats, and house cats and all cats are all family to me, sometimes they also catch rodents. My two older cats used to lay on top of the brooder or next to it and watch the chicks, then when they were outside in their run they'd lay in the run as the chickens worked around them, sometimes they'd also catch mice there and grass snakes.
Now they are raising two little Purrkids for when the Feathered 3 come to live with us.
JRTs have a real 'thing' about rodents, all kinds, I think it is an atavistic scent trigger in them, if they smell a rodent they are on stage and good to go. They are incredible ratters. A barn cat will kill , and partially eat one and thats it for the day, a JRT will stack them up saying 'what a good boy that I am'. That is what they were bred for. In South Africa they are also the personal vehicle protection dog of choice. They can be hugely territorial, but after when the owner is there they will jump in your lap and wash your face.
The big secret in getting along with them is being able to handle being around their energy level. And some people just arnt smart enough or strong enough not to be working for them after awhile. They are definitely not a dog for everybody.
Oh, btw, to keep it on Icelandics, they are also my personal Homestead Heritage Chicken of Choice
Life is good, and better with Icelandic Chickens and Pack Goats !
