Icelandic Chickens

Yup !! I saw that, you know what you need to know, you're a fast study! It will work out for you

Barn cats, and house cats and all cats are all family to me, sometimes they also catch rodents. My two older cats used to lay on top of the brooder or next to it and watch the chicks, then when they were outside in their run they'd lay in the run as the chickens worked around them, sometimes they'd also catch mice there and grass snakes.

Now they are raising two little Purrkids for when the Feathered 3 come to live with us.

JRTs have a real 'thing' about rodents, all kinds, I think it is an atavistic scent trigger in them, if they smell a rodent they are on stage and good to go. They are incredible ratters. A barn cat will kill , and partially eat one and thats it for the day, a JRT will stack them up saying 'what a good boy that I am'. That is what they were bred for. In South Africa they are also the personal vehicle protection dog of choice. They can be hugely territorial, but after when the owner is there they will jump in your lap and wash your face.

The big secret in getting along with them is being able to handle being around their energy level. And some people just arnt smart enough or strong enough not to be working for them after awhile. They are definitely not a dog for everybody.

Oh, btw, to keep it on Icelandics, they are also my personal Homestead Heritage Chicken of Choice

I know have a name for this girl.
I was reading on the Imported English Orps thread that they are calling this "color," Harlequin. So, that is her name!

Doesn't she sorta look like Mary's Bara?

Kathy, I love the combination of the white with the caramel color!! Harlequin is very pretty and appears to have the greenish tint on her legs like some of mine! Here is a pic of the July 30/31 hatch group (taken on 10/30) with my two crested "harlequin" girls. Dagny is in front and has more caramel and a larger crest than Disa. Between them, front to back, are Dimma (pullet), Dilli (cockerel) and Dama (can't really see her but she's white (so far!) and crested, like your Snow). They were out away from the chicken yard when I was taking pics this weekend...I'll have to get some updated pics of them......they change colors so much from hatch to adult and then after an adult molt too! Love 'em!!!

You got some GREAT pictures this week! Better make a calendar with them!

I have the one I got from you..

..what do I need another one for!?!?!

Robin Scotties are great ratters ! That was the first dog we had that I remember when I was little, other them the grandparents Airedales. All the terriers seem to be good on vermin and varmits, I am biased towards the JRT having seen so many excellent ones, if you can live with their high energy they are great, but not a dog I'd want in an apartment, but then I couldnt stand me in an apartment either !

Mary they are beautiful ! I have some darker versions of them, none so light and certainly no Snows !! I will be watching and hoping this year !

Mary O, what colors are the 2 yellows of the Feathered 3 coming in??

Our weather has taken a winter dip, cant get the last remaining lumber up the drive, so have to wait for a thaw. Bummer !

Also, I think Raven started laying! I found this blue egg in the coop floor this morning. It is a different shade of blue, had some blood streaks and has blue dye dots on it. If I get another blue egg in that coop today then this must be Raven's egg!
