Love the pictures! I can hardly wait to see the turkey pictures in the spring.

Speaking of turkeys..... I just watched, My Life as a Turkey, a PBS show that was on in November. It is available to view online, or you can buy the DVD. Mary, you HAVE to see this!

My icelandic eggs are starting to get bigger. Not quite the little pullet bullets they used to be.

I was almost tempted to put one of her eggs in the bator just for fun.

I WON'T DO IT !!!!!!

I am more and more in love with my Icelandic hen than ever.

I've got to get another pen/coop built and then rehome some of my EEs and old hens. Every day I tell my wife I'm going to get rid of my 2+ year old leghorn, and that's the day she lays a huge white egg. someday...

I can relate Mahonri. When I was lamenting the fact that I didn't get my Swedish Flower Hen eggs today my husband said "We're hatching more chicks?" Then he told me he thought the yards looked like there were too many chickens in there already. That is really not the case but I hear what he is saying. I just want ONE!

Obviously he needs a lesson in "chicken math"!lol. It looks like the emu is wearing leggings! Are the donkeys minis? I so want some mini donkeys. And they are finally starting to get cheap around here. Saw a beautiful chocolate spotted male yearling the other day for $75!My wife is so stubborn!$%%#$%^^%@#$^!lol

We are a very frosty 20 degrees this morning.

If you can find a BLM 'Auction' where they have donkeys along with the Mustangs the donkeys are way cheap. And they gentle down very fast. They know the good life when they finally have it. And these ones are also great at keeping stray dogs away.

I could well believe bringing one or two home.

The link to the Turkey video is also on the Heritage Turkey thread.

I am still debating on the Turkey breed, whether Sweetgrass or Royal Palm. I have plenty of time to think it over, I just dont need a turkey that dresses out at well over 20lbs. I should be thinking of breeding the Midget Whites, and maybe to the Palms if I want color. Decisions decisions !

I got some more lumber yesterday to make another pen for Blau and a couple of the hens, including The Contessa, that needs to be. I'm going to wind up with 3 Icelandic Pens !

Life is good, and better with Icelandic Chickens !

Jake, Do a little more research on the Palms as a meat bird. My understanding is that the breast bone is "Y" shape and therefore a different "look" than most are used to as a meat bird.....but if you don't care about that kind of thing....they are beautiful and I think they still taste like any other turkey!!

Forecast here called for a high of 23.....it's 27 now......wonder if that means the low they are calling for of 9 will be 0 or 15!

We had a bit of snow last night so everyone is spending alot of time inside the barn/coop....so I took a few pics. Of the three chicks hatched by Chickie Mama (SLW) the last week of Sept and the two hatched by Kleo Oct 18, one.......that's right...one out of five is a pullet!

BUT.........she is a beauty!!!
(Sorry the close-up is a bit blurry from the zoom/crop but it show the single comb with the little crook in it that many of the pullets seem to have so I had to post it!)

Yes, the Palm has a lighter breast then the bigger Turkeys, one reason why they can natural breed, but I am also a major dark meat fan over the white so its all good to me.
