I LOVE that fart egg bird! God is a God of miracles! That chicken is something else.

I've actually had fart eggs with yolks. Next one goes into the bator, just for fun.

The one in the middle did NOT have a yolk.

*Phew* I'm glad I'm not the only one that goes out to do chicken chores and sits with my birds.

It was fairly short time with them this morning, it was right at 0 at 930am, and when I went back out in early afternoon to check water I noticed all 3 roosters have frostbites on the combs, worst was Isi, with his single comb, Blau and Bjorn with rose combs had some of the tips darkened, none of the hens showed any frost bite. Right now at 447 pm it is 5F. We shall see what will be this winter.

Calling Kathy, Calling Kathy...I brought BarnGirl back up to the house for bumblefoot surgery again today. Her foot isn't as swollen as before but it is warm and red. She had a huge dark scab today a little smaller around than a dime and about as thick. I couldn't see well enough or push the scalpel in hard enough to excise it so Michael did it!

I was shocked that he offered and even more shocked that he was successful. He got it out in one piece. I dug around in the tissue under it but didn't find anything other than making it bleed like crazy. I cut away most of the callused edges where the scab had been to encourage it to stay open to drain. I also gave her a PCN injection. I read somewhere where someone suggested injecting the PCN into the wound on the foot. Have you heard of that and does it make sense?

Sadly I think this is going to be my final attempt at treating her. This is the third time with not much respite in between bouts if any. I am not sure she has even not been limping since the first infection. Her quality of life isn't good right now and she stays in the coop most of the time.

So we'll see what happens. She is in a crate in the garage with food and water and darkness. She seems to be comfortable. Ideas? Thoughts?

Oh no Jake! Did you put vaseline on their combs? I don't know if that really works but people seem to suggest it a lot. Is there any way to insulate the coop?

I never did use the PCN. Yes, I have read about others using it directly in the wound, but I am just not sure of that (thinking like a nurse that gives lots of injections and have never injected INTO a wound).

I used topical on the wound (Neosporin, actually) and just packed it full.

Kola seems to be doing fine, though it did take time. She wore shoes for weeks! I changed them about once a week; repacked Neosporin and rewrapped.

PS....... In researching turkeys, I am now beginning to worry. OMG, 15 turkey?

I should have researched (and worried) before ordering!

When I had one (several actually until I did deeper floor bedding) I excise, debride & irrigate, then put gobs of triple antibiotic ointment IN the wond & goop it well all around the area outside, then apply 2 or 3 2x2s, and having before hand cut a elastic roll of horse leg wrap in 4s, instead of a 6" roll, it is cut in 4s so I have 4 rools that are about 1&1/2" each, wide.
Wrap this around her foot & up the leg & down again to hold the 2x2s on firmly to the ball of her foot.
Then kept in a big rabbit cage for 2 weeks, changing dressing every 3 days or so.
Cleaned poo out several times a day to prevent her stepping in poo again.
If the horse wrap does not stay on, tape the end up the leg with a 1" wide strip of duct tape.
Usually the horse wrap sticks to itself & comes in so many colors.

What kind of turkeys?
I LOVE MINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Get this, with these Beltsvilles, in 4-5 months you have a 14-18 pound dressed carcass.
IF they have grass, and lots of it, they will eat hardly any feed once out to brouse.
They like to roost high, and need a bigger roost farther from a wall than a chicken, so I had to remodel the chicken coop.
Gentle, smart...lovable birds with an array of noises you will come to understand their language & they imprint & will view you as their Mother.
Butcher any far away from the rest of the flock so's the rest cannot see.....
And they fly occasionally, and for no apparent reason...and can land ON TOP of your pens & ruin your netting!
Ya oughta see a 20 pound turkey on plastic bird netting...sheesh!
The netting is drawn clear down to the ground & then snaps & the bird plunks down on the ground!!

Then you have this giant hole............

But I love them!
