Icelandic Chickens

His grandfather passed away and his mom got the tractor, trailer and all attachments, they were loading them in the back of the truck and part of the rake attachment fell and landed on his foot. He's lucky it isn't broken and is just hobbling around.

I had the stomach flu, so nobody was getting attention.

So Dar what happened to the Elk ???? Did it get up and run away or did your wife get to bring it home??? Thats a LOT of meat to leave unaccounted for !

Try Aleve, it works great for arthritis, under the fancy name of Naproxin. It may well help the swelling on your knee.

The Fab Feathered 3 act like they have been here forever, totally unconcerned when one of the Purrkids reaches in to want to play, the pullet just stands there and lets them pet her, neither adult pays them any attention, I think its the lack of mice in attendence on them.

This weekend I will be looking through the sagas looking for appropriate names, but I am thinking Birgitta for the pullet. The little rooster is actually smaller then her, alas and alack I got a real good luck at his comb and he does appear to be not a she. The big guy is easily twice his size, and very outgoing. But the little fellow has very interesting colors coming on, and all three have excellent feathering down the legs. Its going to be fascinating watching them develop !

Here's a picture of Briet next to my Production Red named Red. (hey, my kids named her) I thought it was a good size comparison of the Icelandics to production type breeds.

I haven't figured that out yet. Someone else will have to.

The number of chickens you have is a lot like your age. It is just a number.

Do I have too many? It depends on who you ask. My (soon to be ex) husband says any, are too many.

I have 5 Welsummers, 8 Silver laced and project Wyandottes, 8 Bantam Orpingtons, 9 EE, and 11 misc bantams. I think that is all. But to some that is a lot. To me, for my space, it is an ok number.

Thanks for all of the prayers. I know they worked. I am SO much better now. I'm still very sore, but I think I'll make it.

For a while there I wondered why ANYONE would EVER have a surgery like that. It was serious SEVERE pain from the moment I got home at 2:30PM until just after 8AM this morning. I slept most of the day today. wahoo.

Once again, THANK YOU all for your kind thoughts and prayers.

The Vikings brought the original stock from Norway, there wernt a whole lot of chickens there around 800. According to the information available on the Norwegian Jaerhon it is credited with being the only Native Norwegian Chicken, so my best guess is that they share ancestry at least with the Icelandic. There are a couple other old heritage breeds in Scandinavia that share some common looks and characteristics with the Icelandic in size, hardiness, ranging ability, and colors. I would love to see a DNA comparison with all of the older Scandinavian Landraces.
