Icelandic Chickens

OMG! I would absolutely FREAK out if I had a rat in my coop!!!! I found a nest of mice when I moved my nest box a month ago. It is just a matter of time before they get eaten by a chicken, cat, or dog around here.

Better in the coop than in the house!

Yep, I agree on that!!

The snow we had on Friday night/Saturday morning has now melted and the temps are in the upper 40s so everyone is back outside enjoying what they can find!
Here is the Kella Pic of the Week! Audun showing Kella a piece of canned corn that was a leftover from yesterday's dinner. They make quite the pair!

I went and had a little chat with her today, to tell her of you offer. I'm not too good at "goatish" yet, but I think her response was something like this:

"Thank you so much Mary, I know you have a lovely place, but it would be very dangerous for me to come to you. You see, I'm so utterly gorgeous, that your little myotonic goats would die. They would faint at my beauteousness, and then upon awakening and glimsping me again, out like a light they would go. And so it would continue.

So, I think it best that I remain here, with all these folks, who, while still astonished at my absolute gorgeousness, do not faint every time they see me.

What a lovely couple. Me thinks I should go and find camera that HWMBO stole to take goat pics. Maybe Chickielady already posted pics of them, before they came to me.

MICE: we had one in the place in the cupboard under the range in the kitchen, so HWMBO bought one of those electric thingies, the mouse gets in and can't get out. Works great. Haven't had another since. We use poison in the basement; haven't had any in the pasture, but I did see a chicken with what looked like a mouse.

Sadly, HWMBO is incredibly allergic to cats, so we can't have any, at least, none that come inside or anywhere near ME even. If I so much as get a cat hair on me, he can tell within minutes - his face and eyes swell up and he looks awful. I've never known anyone with a reaction like that. Oh, well, the chickens seem to do fine without cats around.

Thanks - Mary did a great job! I love colors, that's why I got Icees, because they come in EVERY color (my sister has asked for a pink one). I really like your Audun, but light colored chickens get really muddy here in winter.

I shall let the roos cross with my Ameraucanas, but keep the babies "marked" . I like that the Icees are good foragers, and winter hardy. I think the Ameruacana cross will be nice - blue eggs for my customers!

Sorry, I can't help but laugh...

those Wheaties want to brood everything.
I have caught them sitting on each other!

If those mice are still around in the daylight, the other chickens will catch and eat them.
I have had good luck catching mice using the cheap, old fashioned mouse traps baited
with peanut butter. You have to put them in areas that the chickens cannot reach.
You don't want to use any kind of poison or bait in case the chickens eat the mice.

BTW...every time I see a mouse I think of you

Luanne,
Your broodiville is invading my layers coop. I see it starting. Wheaties, Marans..... ALL of your broody-inclined kids are thinking about it now. I'm bootin' them off nests at lock up time, so far. I see more drastic measures coming.

You go ahead and laugh, lady. It'll come back and bite ya.

Remember, my Barred Rocks and New Hampshires have the broody gene, too.

I am putting cayenne pepper in all the feed. Those mice might turn and run the other way once they get a taste.

Kathyin Mo I use those "bar Baits" that they have at the feed stores. They really keep the mice in check. Just be sure to keep it away from the birds. I found using an old clay flower pot upside down on a bowl is a good "hideing" place for it the mice go in thru the hole in the bottom which has become the top. Be sure to use the wider pots so the birds can't tip it over. And for some reason the mice that come out in the open and die are never bothered by the chickens! They catch mice if they see them, but for some reason leave the poisioned ones alone. They must smell it or something.
I'm still just getting two eggs a day but thats okay,I would rather they would wait till spring and lay then they can safetly set on their eggs.
