WOW WHAT A DAY>

Mary, I would be putting neosporin on those areas where you can see the infected flesh. If she were here, I would also wash the area with chlorhexidine (Peridex). I doubt they sell that in the feed stores. I prescribe if for folks with periodontal disease.

Thanks Mahonri. I didn't want to mess too much with the infection until the PCN got into her system. I will bring her in tomorrow and clean her up some more and put Triple antibiotic on her. I also have some stuff they are using now for wound healing in equines. It is like a miracle. it is called Vetericyn.

Wound & Infection Care is a innovated topical solution for the care of wounds, infections and irritations caused by bacteria, virus, fungus or spores. This steroid-free, antibiotic-free, no-rinse solution is non-toxic. Made up of compounds similar to those produced by the animal’s own immune system, Vetericyn will not harm healthy tissue. Vetericyn formulated with targeted pH around 7 (neutral point) and will not sting when applied. In solution this product kills 99.999% of bacteria, single-cell organisms and fungi making it ideal for infections caused by bacteria such as E.coli, Staph (MRSA), Strep, Moraxella bovis, Pasteurella, Actinomyces and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. I may clean the outside of her face and the back of her neck with that. In that Vetericyn has a safety profile comparable to saline (safety data available in a separate report), it is non-toxic and non-irritating while safe to use around eyes, nose and mouth. It contains no steroids or antibiotics and can be easily applied with no mixing or dilution required. Rinsing after use is not required.

I think I will use this to clean the part on the outside of the mouth and look at the drugstore for something that can go in the mouth. I was just reading on their website that it is good for bumblefoot. I never thought of that for Barngirl. She may have to come back up to the house for some treatment.

Wow Mary, she must have known you'd help her out and made sure you heard her when you went in the coop. The fact that she dealt with the mesh for weeks shows how tough she is and with your great care, I'm sure she'll be fine! Thanks for the tip on the Vetericyn

....sounds like a great thing to have in the first aid kit.
I hope everyone has a great week!

Good gravy, Mary!

WHY couldn't they have been laying 2.5 weeks ago?

Thanks Hillbilly Hen. My husband came in to talk to me before I went to sleep last night. He said of all the calamities our animals have had, this one bothers him the most. He said the sight of that plastic having cut her mouth all the way to her ears really got to him. Knowing that it took months to get that way really upset him. I am angry about that mesh being on the sod. We specifically ordered sod without it because we had trouble with them digging it up at our last house. The mesh on that sod was much thicker and not as much a threat to the animals as a tripping hazard to me. This stuff if thin and super strong and this is the second serious injury it has caused. I try to cut it off as it comes up but I never seem to get it all. Working on forgiving myself and crawling around out there today with scissors trying to cut what's above ground.
