Icelandic Chickens

The barn is finished except for the big overhead door that will go in next Tuesday hopefully. I still have some interior pen divisions to do before I can move the chickens and turkeys but hopefully we'll have everything done and everyone moved by next Saturday.. We did get the pigs moved out of the backyard today... Should have had a camcorder going for that...

The kids will definitely have something to talk about on school Monday!! I'm so relieved to not be in violation of zoning anymore

A renegade rooster is one thing... try having 6 pigs in your backyard without anyone finding out....

Anyway here's a picture... more on my barn thread and we'll put more up through out this coming week as parts get finished and animals get moved..

OK Shawn, I'm officially jealous. Of course, I'd love to live on a big lot in Nevada, MO the one near Auburn, CA that has the emus or even the wooded lot up in the great northwest.

I guess I have to live vicariously through all of you.

Whoo! I got five eggs from my six hens today! I noticed everyone talks about theirs layinf white eggs. One of mine lays an almost red egg, not as dark as a RIR or something like that, but diffently not white. Does anyone else have Icelandics that lay off white eggs?

I've seen white and slightly off white, but if you're getting brown or red, there's been another roo involved somewhere and that bird is not pure Icelandic.

Great looking barn Shawn, now when can you move it up to Ak for me ???

Yup, a red egg means someone has been where they shouldnt have, or somerooster.

I have a light on mine 24/7 and they are responding accordingly, normally one per hen, occasionally one will rest a day but the eggs are coming well dispite the cold.

Life is good, and better with Icelandics !

Fabulous barn!

I told my husband that if we ever move, a barn and pasture is a requirement!

We're picking up some pig today. My step dad knows a man that raises them. I called him to find out prices and information, etc but the guy never called me back. Then my step dad calls yesterday and says I have your pig for you to pick up - needless to say I was shocked.

Now I gotta find freezer space. Thankfully, some of it is being smoked - so I have time to eat some before that shows up!

Gorgeous Barn, I'm jealous!

PIG - a friend went to the large animal auction yesterday and bought 3 piglets which we will be sharing. Fatten a bit more for a few weeks and then butcher. I hadn't thought about smoking, but that's a great IDEA. Have you noticed, it doesn't seem to matter how many fridge's or freezers one has, there never seems to be quite enough room
