Icelandic Chickens

DH told me last night that he will put some bigger blocks on the bottom of it. I don't ususally use it unless I have a lot of young ones in the coop.

You can kinda see in this picture. The waste isn't too bad. Of course, they do still waste it, but not as bad in these.
(These are my F2 Project birds..... Project Delaware)

Wow Kathy! They look fantastic! Great job!

I have been following this thread for almost as long as it's been here. Anyway, I love how these chickens are good free rangers and can find alot of their own food. I do have a question though, how would they do in the Texas heat? Last summer we had days that were 117 degrees. Most of the summer days are over 100 degrees, how would they fare in this type of climat? I would like a white egg layer to add to my layer flock, but if I really liked them then I would probably set up a breeding pen for them. How good of a layer are they? Do they lay good in the dead of winter/summer? Thanks so much for your help.

I'm probably not the best person to answer this as I don't have as many Icelandics as most here do. But there are several people that have Icelandics in Arizona (Mahonri, Laree and Boston) and they seem to be doing fine there. Texas can't be worse than Arizona temp wise, right? I'm in CA and we have days that get to 115, but usually for no more than a week, and I haven't lost any birds to the heat yet.

My hen (lost my other one to a predator) is a great layer of medium sized eggs (she averages 5 per week), she's molting right now (so not laying at the moment), but she's growing feathers in really fast. If you like broodies, they are great at sitting!

Here is the feeder I mentioned yesterday. It is 5 feet long. In the up position, it is 7 1/2 inches high along the side, in the lower position, it is 4 inches high along the side. I took close-ups of the ends to show how the "no perching" bar can be adjusted. It was used when I got it, but the price was right....$8.

Dulla being the model and showing the feeder's size.

Laura and Daron,
You should submit your feeders to this contest in the Easter Hatch!

Yes, you need to enter them both!!

Daron, You mentioned putting a "cone" in the center to help keep the feed headed toward the openings. How about a piece of linoleum shaped like a cone and sat in there. You can usually get scraps or ends from a flooring store for next to nothing...or if you know someone who installs flooring...for free!!

I went out late this morning to get a picture and measurements of the feeder. I saw that Dagny was on the nest and thought I'd snap a picture. I got the camera focused and she started to stand up....I caught the egg just as she had layed it!!!! I don't know if it shows in the picture on the computer, but at home I can see that the egg is still "wet" with the bloom. Of course, you know me with my pictures, I just had to share!! (Yes, that is a large plastic flower pot that is being used as a nest. It is being held in the corner with a length of chain from an old swag lamp..yes, nothing goes to waste here!
