Icelandic Chickens

Sorry about the Isbar Mary. You have four more shipping on Monday. I have five girls laying now! Kelly set six eggs and all six are developing. All of the ones I set were fertile too but I had a couple of quitters.

I got my first Cream Legbar egg today! But there is a problem. The cream legbars are in the coop/yard where Stella resides. There is very little difference in the color of Stella's eggs and the cream legbar eggs. So that means I am going to have to turn Stella loose back down in the Icelandic coop! I know she will resort to her wandering ways but I just can't take a chance of selling someone a $70.00 chick that isn't pure. So tonight I will pull her off the roost and deposit her down with the Icelandics. I totally expect to see her walking down the road by mid afternoon tomorrow. I can't put her over with the Isbars because they lay green eggs and some are quite similar to Stella. So I will hope she stays home and safe but if she doesn't it will be her own darned fault!

Absolutely precious Kathy. You're now a master hatcher - if you can hatch emu's, you can hatch ANYTHING! Wonder what's next?

Just wanted to warn you Kathy. The first couple of days the baby emus sit down a lot and scoot on their hocks. When you pick them up they feel squishy like a water balloon. After a few days that goes away and they start to stand and walk around more.

As for the feeder and waterer here's the trick. Get two of those GLAD brand disposable plastic storage containers with the blue lids. Take the lid and cut out a half moon shape like the one I drew here.

Then wrap the cut edges in duct tape because they will be sharp. Then tape a quarter to the lid just above the cut where I drew the circle. Fill one with water and one with feed. To get the babies to eat and drink you have to teach them. They are very curious about tinny sounds so if you tap on the quarter with your fingernail they will try to do the same thing. They will miss and their beaks will slip into the water or feed and they will like it. Eventually they will start eating without the tapping. After a few days they can have veggies like finely shredded romaine lettuce. Feed them this from your hand to get them used to being with you.

They love to be wrapped in a towel and held snuggled to your neck. Keep their feet tucked up under them. They can't poop in that position! More tips to come!

Too cute, the emus and the chicks. It's a bright sunshiny day so I need to finish my chores before I run out of daylight. I'll be back to check on ya'all quick as I can.
