Icelandic Chickens

Question, these Icelandics what I call wheatens with a blue wash on them , what are they called besides blue washed wheatens??

I haven't seen the birds, but I am guessing they are just simply blue wheaten? Like my Arkansas Traveler (American Game) hen?

Love the pictures Mary! I will have to go out again and compare! By the way do you keep your Turkeys and chickens separate somehow? I've always wanted turkeys but were afraid of them getting sick from the chickens. black head i think it is?

Yikes, just getting caught up. I just returned from closing the emus and goats in for the night and decided to check the Iclandic coop.
I thought I had a broody in there this morning and wanted to check it out. WRONG, there are three of them now!

So I came up to the Isbars coop where I suspected I have a splash who is broody in addition to my black Ameraucana who has been sitting for four weeks. RIGHT, but no cigar! Skye, my wheaten Ameraucana is now broody too but has decided take the fast track to motherhood and just sit on Raven!

I didn't have the heart to tell her Raven's eggs are fake. Besides she is sound asleep.



So I moved her up to the top nest box and gave two fake eggs of her own. She woke up and wasn't happy.



Please excuse Raven's bare back. She is extremely popular with Bjorn and will have a saddle when she finishes being broody. With all this nesting today I only got three Isbar eggs!

Oh, and I looked up from my desk this afternoon and saw this huge blackbird.

I had turkeys before, and had them with my chickens with no issue. I fed my poults meditated feed that prevents blackhead. I do not know if I have blackhead in my area or not, but my turkeys did fine. Yay for you Mary! Glad that Stella came back!

What scares me is the people in the turkey section that say the Tom's try to mate with the hens and can kill them. I'm not worried about blackhead so much, but I want my hens to be okay.

Oh my Mary - the broodies are after you!!!! I'll tell you what, I'll be a good friend and take that broody splash isbar off your hands.

And I know what you mean about it causing the others to slack off. I'm hardly getting any eggs from the coop that my broody wellie is in.

I've kept my turkeys and chickens together with no issues but I do free range on a lot of space. The toms never hassled the hens but they really couldn't catch them if they wanted to. All the turkeys, especially the hens are kind of peace keepers. They will knock the roosters off the hens if they get too rambunctious. It's really kind of funny because once a cockerel has someones attention they won't back off easily. My slate turkey hen was once so highly offended by one of the EE roos she spent all day chasing him away from the flock. He finally wedged himself in a corner way up in the rafters to escape her and fortunately by morning she forgave (or forgot) him.

One note Jake back again, re the Blue Wheatens, is that what they are? What is the Rooster coloration thats the mate? A BlueBreasted Red wing?

This is my favorite color on both. Little Bjorn is a BBRed wing, with feathered legs, he is developing into a beautiful bird, smaller RC, crested, and an active breeder. I have the one Blue Hen, and one Black with Gold cape, and the rest wheaten. I should have a very nice cross section of colors from them, hopefully can trade some roosters with Michelle,

hard frost here this morn, 25, was warmer in Caswell, AK, Willow too.

Life is good, and better with Icelandic Chickens !
