Icelandic Chickens

Is it some sort of genetic thing? I really don't need anymore roos. And I just don't have the heart to cull them. Do you know of anyone in the northeast that might want a couple?

Quote: Me either. Color patterning can help you with sex though. But it's much trickier in Icelandics than in other breeds.

Kathy,

I think you need one of these.

How could you pass up a face like this?

Deb
They are adorable Deb. Alpaca's right? I gotta ask though, what do you use them for? (their purpose as a farm animal?) Are they guardian animals?

This is sooooooooo NOT funny. Now another welsummer is broody. I took her off the nest last night and put her on the roost. She's back on the nest this morning. I like my broodies, but I don't want broody welsummers!!!!

Yes Alpacas. At my house, their purpose in life is being adorable. They are like a dog in livestock form. They coming running to the fence when you go out and mill around you. They make the cutest humming sound. You throw your arm around their neck, then they will stand perfectly still to be haltered and walk along with you like a dog. It amazes me that herd sires respond the same way. A fully intact male is just as friendly.

Guards, nope. They are great watchers and will let you know if something is there, but then they will all go stand behind our llama. He is a great guard animal. All the neighbors have lost fully grown sheep, we've never even lost a lamb to predation.

They have two purposes. The "good" show ones, people trade like high priced trading cards (think $50,000-$100,000 on up). Not ours

The primary reason people keep them other than pasture decorations is to grow fiber. It sells raw off the animal for $10-$50 per pound. Each fleece weighs 5-10 pounds. The shearer is coming next Saturday and we have five adults, plus the new cria. So far though, I just give the fleeces to friends that spin. It produces a yarn soft as spiderwebs.

They're just a fun animal to have around. Easy on the land (padded feet), nibble here and there, very easy keepers (half flake of hay per day each). I just love them, they look like Walt Disney designed them himself!

Okay, since you've been posting sheep pictures, I'll take a picture of one of this years lambs. She is adorable!

Deb, They do seem like great Animals..
Many people up here seem to raise them. I guess they are also too big to be taken by a Mountain Lion which is nice.

My friend had a full grown sheep killed last week and another friend had a neighbor that lost a lab to one of those buggers a few weeks ago.

That is always something you have to keep in the back of your mind if you live where there are predadtors

Darn I am really thinking my teenager is a Rooster. He is so darn quick it is hard to get a good picture but the feather pattern suggesting so. Just suprised how small he is still. We shall see. Hopefully a few of the chicks I got from Molly are females.. Molly the one is getting such a cool Lavender pattern on her/him. hopefully it progresses and that she is a she.
With all my sudden projects I am working towards I will be on Rooster overload..........

to recap.
I think i am giving up a breeding pair of Campines (soon no hurry) I love these guys and gals
I have one Welsummer chick that I got with my Legbar x penedesenca/welsummer crosses that I do not really need.
She may just end up with the assorted Chicken (free range flock) down the road if I keep her.
