Icelandic Chickens

Why is there a roo in the broody buster?

He's looking at them like they're a bunch of crazy women!

And what happened to your turkeys? You are freaking Mary and I out - ours are being shipped Monday. Mary is kind enough to brood them for me until I get back from vacation.

Three hours later, I saw this.....

You have one VERY popular nest there.

I've got a BO that has been trying to go broody. I need to find a less active place for her and decide what she can have. I'd love to give here some of my new NH & BR eggs, but I don't trust her, a first timer. The only other pure eggs I'd have at the moment are GC (I really don't need to raise any more this year), HQ welsummer (maybe) or serama (the eggs are about a quarter the size of her head!). Poor girl, she really wants to be a mommy.

Re to Turkeys I raised up 6 Wishard in a run, in upstate NY, let them out at four mos, and immediately they began roosting in trees and then on top of the barn and sheds, I kept one in a run as I raised him out for Thanksgiving, that left 2 Toms and 3 hens, they spent the winter outside in trees, and ranging around on the ground, I fed them daily on the ground next to the chicken house and they were right there for feeding, in April I started noticing each hen being gone and showing up quickly for breakfast and then gone.

In June each hen had 4-6 poults with her coming for feeding.

Easiest turkeys to raise I have ever had and would be my #1 choice again to raise. They do most of it themselves. None ever chilled off that I knew of, and I had no problem scooping up young Toms as I wanted to, they werenot at all flighty.

So, check out Wishard Turkeys sometime, I really like them. BTW, the Toms I dressed out were averaging over 18lb each, dressed, live weight had to be close to 30lbs I think. That was at around 16 mos.

Well... I finally have a Icelandic broody that appears to mean business!!! She is happily situated on a pile of icelandic eggs with one Maran egg just for fun.. 20 days to go...

I've decided I need to schedule a vacation after my vacation to recuperate. My girls were slave drivers last week.

7AM to 5PM Tue-Friday and 7AM to Noon on Saturday. Too much to do and too little time.

My NYD Icelandics are now my best layers... I get about 4 a day from the 7 of them.... but I do have the one SFH in there so it might be laying as well.

My AC unit is out in the big coop so all I can do is pray at this point in time, I don't have time to put another one in and it doesn't look promising.

I'll be in Salt Lake on Wednesday for the wedding so I hope the neighbor boy I've hired will put some ice in the coops.

C'mon September.

Aww! I wish I'd known sooner that you're going to be up here tomorrow. I'm in West Valley and would love to say hi to another BYC'er, but it's all good. Perhaps I should get better acquainted with people before setting up meetings, heh
