Icelandic Chickens

I hatched about 50/50 males/females from both NotAFarm and from Boston. I think slightly more males from NotAFarm, slightly more females from Boston Bryce.

I still have one where the jury is out. I'll have to get a pic.

At the end of the day I have 9 females and Drekki Jr.

My Icelandics from Mary hatched 1/24 and I got 1 cockerel and 5 pullets. I realize I was very lucky though. I have made up for it in the cockerel department the rest of the year in other breeds.

Those are some nice looking roos and pullets.

Just out of curiosity did anyone hatch more females than males this year ? I was about 85% cockerels, ducks and turkeys I was 50/50.

I don't know about my ratio, for I was not able to incubate much this year, BUT my current Icelandic flock that I hatched from my infected flock is- 6 females, 1 male! That is all that I hatched! 7 chicks! I just can't believe that I only got 1 male! But he is sure is nice looking. :D I will "try" to take a picture of him and the other females. My Easter hatch Icelandics is 1 male and 3 females, so maybe my former flock was throwing more females than the males. But NOT complaining. :D

Does Drekki Jr. look like Drekki ? He is such a handsome Rooster. I was thinking about you today, I had a Dentist appointment (just routine cleaning).

You were lucky, my luck was similar, Icelandics were the only breed I hatched more females, I only hatched 5 though.

That's a wonderful start for your new flock!

I don't think Drekki Jr. is near as handsome as Drekki, but he's getting there. I think I've stopped him from crowing..... every time he would go to crow I'd go after him... but he has two Icelandic hens that he likes.... at least they are submitting to his advances. I may hatch on New Years if I don't get a broody before then!

I hope you hatch on Easter, or at least host your hatch along. New Years is way to early here, no more indoor chicks, not even in my wood shop!

Mahonri is going to host his hatch-alongs even if he doesn't hatch. If he doesn't, who are we going to make fun of for months on end? End of subject.
