Idaho?

Personally I think their first attempt at an ordinance is ridiculous and not feasible.. Seriously $10 license fee per chicken when you only spend $2-3 at the feed store to buy a chick in the first place? And then how do you prove that they have their vacinations? Tattoo the chicken and have notarized documentation that the chicken with corresponding tattoo number has the required vacinations? They are making this into a much bigger deal than it needs to be...

Here are a couple of ordinances enacted in the past couple of years on my side of the State.. someone there locally ought to take copies to the City and the Newspaper... put some pressure on them to enact an ordinance that makes sense and enforceable!!

Here's a link to Ammons... it wouldn't play nice to copy and paste..

Any polish experts out there? I have four polish juveniles. I'm thinking....boys. However, I'm not very familiar with this breed. Any guesses? They are large fowl bearded polish.

To me those all look like they will be hens, another way to figure out what they will be will be the nostrill, or if you are starting to see a bit of a woddle, cause I see you have a bearded lacedpolish and as do i, but my roosters have a bit of a woddle but not much.. it looks like they are maybe about 2 months old the one in the 3rd pictures i'm not to sure about if that is a different one from Picture 1 and 2 it looks like it may be a rooster but the rest look like they will be hens to me

Oakley's is obviously very lenient. The city manager said he would like to ban all animals period but knows the residents would never stand for that. lol.
His reason was interesting though. He said that they all draw dogs and that is always trouble. I gather he spends too much of his time listening to dog complaints and catching strays.
If dogs cause trouble I should not be responsible for other owners not being more careful.
Oakley's law goes like this:

All livestock shall have the following animal unit equivalents: 1 Animal Unit per acre.
1 Slaughter or feeder cow = 1.0 animal unit
1 Dairy Heifer = .8 AU
1 Beef cow/calf = 1.0 AU
1 Mature Dairy cow, dry or milking = 1.0 AU
1 Swine = 1.0 AU
1 Sheep or lamb = .2 AU ( 5 Sheep = 1.0 AU )
1 Horse = 1.0 AU
1 Turkey / Fowl / Geese = .072 AU (55 Turkeys = 4.0 AU)
1 Chicken / Duck = .03 AU (30 Chickens = 1.0 AU )
1 Fur bearing animal = .03 AU (30 = 1.0 AU )
1 Goat = .3 AU (3 goats = 1.0 AU )

For species not listed in this list, 750 lbs of livestock are equivalent to one animal unit. For example bison, llamas, donkeys etc.

There is also the 15 foot set aside for adjoining properties listed in another ordinance for out buildings. Other than that this is the only regulation on animals ie livestock.

Seems we have a fairly relaxed ordinance here in Caldwell, the meat of which I've copied below:

"Animals defined as “pets” or kept as companion animals are permitted in defined numbers, as pets. For instance, Caldwell citizens may now keep up to 10 chickens as pets whether they’re on a one-half acre parcel or a 2,000-square foot parcel. Should someone desire to own more than 10 chickens, that individual would either have to have at least one-half acre of property or obtain special use permit approval through a public hearing.

Animals not listed as “pets” are either prohibited completely or are classified as “livestock”. The keeping of livestock requires a minimum lot size of one-half acre. The ordinance gives
maximum number of livestock allowed per one-half acre of property. Should an individual desire to have numbers of livestock more than the maximum allowed, special use permit approval
would need to be obtained. For instance, roosters are classified as “livestock” and thus require a minimum lot size of one-half acre for an individual to keep one rooster. Should someone desire
to own a rooster with less than that lot size, special use permit approval would have to be obtained or the rooster would not be allowed.

All animals, regardless of being classified as livestock or pets, have maintenance requirements. Animals are not allowed to become a nuisance (which is defined in said ordinance). All persons
who keep or maintain any animals shall keep them confined at all times to the subject property. All animals and any structure, etc. pertinent to the animals, must be kept in a clean and sanitary
condition, free from obnoxious odors and substances."

it's a good thing we are limited - I would have to build chicken condos to fit all of the breeds I'm interested in!!

Please post pictures of your new coop! How fun.

Ditto!!!

I agree that Burley's attempts at an ordinance are WAY overdone... someone needs to take a chill pill, seriously... It kind of is weird to me when they are not allowed. I think the birds I have in my layer flock at my house (breeder birds are at my mom's b/c she can have roos) are MUCH quieter than several of the neighbor's dogs... and better contained, as well...

Interesting, that's for sure, but we are definitely here to be your cheerleaders!!

Anne the council meeting is not until next Tuesday it is always the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays. I have never been asked to prove my dogs were vaccinated so that shouldn't be required for the chickens either.

Ty for the information on the meetings, lilwhisper.
I am thinking Burley ought to seriously consider an exemption for 4H. 4H is a pretty big deal for the kids
and chickens would be the most practical for those living in Burley. It would also be a way for the town to
get used to the idea of chickens.
Anyone know what the ordinances are in Twin? One of my kids lives in town there. When she moved into
her house there was a chicken/rabbit coup in the back so I assumed chickens were legal there.

Coop was dropped off today! It was so much more than I was expecting!! I am so thrilled!! It is so much bigger too. Enough room for my ducks to sleep comfortable as well! It was made just as requested as well... one whole side of it opens for cleaning instead of a little door. It has a *large* nesting box with 4 nests in it. It was sibling high school brothers who made it.

All it needs is a door made for the little chicken cut out... because I want to be able to lock them in at night and then possibly one more vent hole cut into the top area. Other than that, perfect-o! A nice coat of paint as well, to match our shed it is next to.

Will post pictures ASAP, once the sun comes back out.

These are the moments I'm glad I'm on county land, I haven't been able to find a single livestock rule, just how I like it.... Although I do have an acre and 3/4, and my neighbor is letting us use his pasture for more goat/llama space. Wheeeee! I try not to get ridiculous with the critters, so hopefully the breeding pens with more roos doesn't make anyone nutty.

Sometimes I am so jealous of my mom. She has all the water she needs from uncontaminated springs, and no limits on any livestock she might want. My brothers have property adjoining and have animals so she doesnt need to raise any herself but she can. Oh and then there was the herd of more than 20 deer she saw feeding across her driveway yesterday morning.
She lives just a few miles from me. :D
