Idaho?

Right now I would be wondering if the neighbor is the one to not trust with the chicks! I would wonder if the neighbor was trying to get rid of some chickens!

:( now Patience (the favorite of course and the only one I don't suspect to be a rooster) is acting lethargic. Can chicks have heart attacks? She was fine when I posted earlier but now she's laying down peeping and/or sleeping and won't stand up. I turned the lamp back on in the brooder in the hopes that maybe she's just cold. The temp did suddenly drop outside.

It was interesting that one of the big reasons for putting it down was the Hy-Line chicken company said they were afraid that backyard chickens would contaminate their operations. So I went looking to see what they do. Was pretty interesting. They produce and breed chickens for the huge chicken laying operations. Exactly the kind of eggs we raise our own chickens to avoid.
I had NO idea there was a big operation of that nature here in Cassia county.

She's gone. I went down to check on her and she was twisted all weird. I straitened her out and she started shaking. I told my 5 year old to hold her and say goodbye. She died in the arms of a little girl who loved her very much. sadbye:

It's my 5 year old's birthday too, poor girl. She asked if we can get another chick which with my remaining 2 being 4 weeks old I assume that means several more chicks. Lol

So sorry for your loss, it is just as heart breaking when you haven't had them for so long! I'm sure someone will be able to help figure out what happened to her, from your description, it sounds like something kind of common that chicks can get.

It was from a high school kid in Meridian and is a wonderful coop actually. The only thing we could see wrong - which really wasn't wrong was that there was no coop door so I am building one.

I'm sorry to hear about your experience! We were chancing it as well though so I am pretty surprised it didn't end up like that. My dad was going to help me build ourss but he just works too much so he looked it over after it was delivered and was pretty pleased besides the wobbly roost. But the roost was positioned wrong because I requested a full side opening door so I am sure he just wasn't sure how to do it since there wasn't a "wall" to place it on.

I am just glad it wasn't the same person and glad that your fixes were minor. I am not looking forward to having to fix the nesting box lid when I get back, next time I am building my own. He also made it too small for the amount of chickens I needed to house.

Jack Thomas has broiler.. probably work pretty well.. 80 lb bag... I think it is $32ish/100 lbs
They have it again? I like to mix it with my layer pellets... cheaper than CAL by FAR!!
HI there. Gooding Hillbilly here. We have 4 Jersey Giant hens, A Silver Laced roo the neighbors gave us, and I just picked up 23 chicks from the co-op. 15 cornish crosses, 5 Sagittas, and 3 others that I don't know what they are. I'm loving the chickens. I had one of the giants go broody last year, but the roo last year was a dud. I'm praying every day that one of the girls goes broody again this year, and soon.

My blog is rhaige9.blogspot.com. It's everything that goes on here, recipies, horses, chickens, the calf, the garden, projects we're working on...

WELCOME!!!

Welcome! I'm so glad to see so many more people on here! Now if some of y'all were here up north, that'd be even better!

Idaho Falls folks, I'll be down the weekend of May 18th and 19th for the Snake River Fiber Festival and I'll be stalking your eggs.

What are you looking for??? If you're needing to get rid of any chicks, I bet you'd find some homes for them, too...

Oh, so sorry, it is always sad when they die, poor little things!!

Now, that is interesting... they must be paying a lot of taxes for the city council to side with them... but what about all the county area you have out there, too.. is Hy-line trying to change zoning everywhere around them??

Well, Zip the Jack Russel Terrier puppy is a better dog than I give her credit. I thought for sure if she ever got close enough to a chick, she would grab one.

I had her tied out in the yard on a lanyard to give her a chance to go potty (she takes forever to do it and I would be out there an hour waiting)

The chicks were in their little run for the day since it's nice out.

Husband unbeknownst to me adjusted Zip's collar, so she slipped her collar.

I hear this huge ruckus outside coming from the direction of the run and see Zip missing from her tree and braced myself for the worst. The neighbor was outside when I came running and said "Don't worry, she was sitting in your driveway so I put her in the little fence so a car wouldn't hit her." My heart dropped and I KNEW there would be carnage.

She was a good dog. I still don't trust her with them, but today everyone remained unscathed.

Wish i could say the same for my dog.. he doesnt bother the larger birds but i had 7 2 month olds chicks that i was gona sell some and keep back like 2 of them and i let them out in the run today since it was beautiful after i got home from my grave yard of work.. and by time i woke up i looked out my window to check and make sure they were ok i saw the run door broken threw and saw all my babies layed out across my yard.. and my dog was out there waggin his tail like look mommi i caught dinner

he is still learning though he knows not to hurt the adults but babies i guess i didnt train him on yet cause i dont let them loose with him :/ but now he will be taught not to touch them if so he will get a big spanking and locked up from now on ><

Sorry to hear about the losses :( maybe someone with more experience than I would have some ideas about the chick that went lethargic?

I worry about our dogs - so far they are just super curious. The chickens are bigger than my chuahua/terrier mix and she is intimidated, my lab mix likes to nap in my growing pen when I have the babies out in their playpen on nice days. Still keeping a close eye on them..

My husband and I are looking for acreage outside of city limits. Caldwell seems to be chicken/farming friendly but we want more room for more CHICKENS :)

Anyone with bantam cochin experience? I'm thinking the pics I'm posting are of a pullet, but would like a second opinion.. only had my phone to use, I apologize for the quality.
