Idaho?

I have 2 red stars, 1 australorp, 2 ameraucanas, 1 Ancona and 1 Plymouth rock roo. Hoping to add some Mille fleurs soon. All about 12 weeks and the roo is 16 weeks.

Got the coop idea of the coops section of this site. It's been so helpful for a newbie like myself :D

Out of curiosity, does anyone local have a small used incubator cheap? I was thinking it would be fun to hatch a couple chicks while my neice and nephew are visiting from Hong Kong in a couple weeks. If I got the eggs in now, it would be just about right....

SUPER cute coop! Love all the white trim, that was some work :)

It's been a while since I have posted anything in this thread so I thought I would stop in and say hi. I am an 'active lurker' on this thread and enjoy all of the pictures. I have 4 SLW hens that are a little over a year old and 4 BSL, 4 BO's, and 4 LB pullets that are just about 5 months old and I am just starting to get a few eggs from the younger ones. Oh, and I can forget about my older RIR rescue hen! All my girls free range on about a 1/2 acre pasture where we store our RV, spare truck, and other toys and that is what they hide under for shade during the day since we don't have a lot of tree's on that part of the land and unfortunately the coop is South-West facing since the coop was converted from a loafing shed from the previous owners. I feel bad for the girls, it's been so hot lately! I take fresh water to them in the morning and when I get home in the evenings and put blocks of ice in it to cool it down for them. I've been thinking of adding a small plastic kid pool in the shade to their area for wading, anyone else had any luck with it? Anyways...I love my girls to death, they are all so sweet and curious. Hopefully the new fencing we added will keep the coyotes away, last winter we lost most of our hens to them and then fixed the fence. Well that is about it for now! I really enjoying seeing the pictures on here, one of these days I'll get around to posting some!

Sounds like you are a great chicken mom :) I have wondered about the kiddie pool too, worried they would fall over and drown, do they swim like ducks, does anybody know>? hard to picture that lol

Hi there!! Thanks for stopping by!! Yes, we love pics, when you have a minute... A kiddie pool... probably if the water isn't too deep, it would be fine, chickens can swim, just not very well and not for very long

When I was younger we would flood irrigate the field sometimes, and the hens sometimes would start walking through the water and then get into the ditch before they realized what was happening.. .I never had one drown, they just flapped their wings till they got back to where their feet touch the ground, but they didn't like it, lol...

Sorry I should have been a little more detailed. I did some reading up, no chickens do not swim and they will drown in to much water, so I was thinking of only using about 4 inches or less of water. Not sure how quickly that would heat up with the heat we are having if it was in the shade. We also flood irrigate part of the the area they are in....the water never makes it to the coops or the toys...but they love to go wade in the water...if I had my way I would be irrigating everyday for them on the hot days! Today is going to be another bruttaly hot day as well! How is everyone else's chickens handling the heat?

I guess I should have clarified... watching them, you're right, they didn't swim, but they did float for a few minutes, enough time to flap their wings back to shallower water.. so 4 inches shouldn't be any big deal, and I would think if it's in the shade it'll still be refreshing from the stifling heat!

I need to put some for shade over my hens' run, it has been so humid today, and although spraying them down seems to help, I can't help but think that if it was all shady they'd be more comfortable...

Birdguy, does your barn get really hot?? I bet having a loft helps some??
