One of my EE hens has a broken toe, and since it has gotten really cold, she occasionally limps a little, I was thinking it might be a little arthritic to her or something on the cold, cold days...

I love having broody hens, they are so awesome!! I totally broke my no chickens in the house rule with that girl, also because I really wanted my kiddos to be able to watch her take care of her babies, I always loved that, they are such good little mommas when they are really set on it!!

yeah i think that is what happened to Lou(rooster). I checked him over and no Bumble foot just the busted toe which probably hurts to walk on in this cold weather. Although he does have really bad frostbite on his comb poor thing, most of the comb will be lost and he will look like a hen...lol. My dad still won't let me put a heat lamp out there.

My Maran's roo got bad frostbite, too.. he'll lose some of the top of it... I don't heat either... a lot of the people on the UT thread do, but I want my birds to be hardy, so no extra heat in the coop, but secure from the drafts... I do use a water heater, I can't stand getting ice out of waterers, drives me batty, lol... link below on how I did that=)

I just saw today some frostbite on my poor FCBM roo El Guapo.... I refuse to heat either, although I am going to insualte the roof of the coop, it's an old metal roof 3 side that we enclosed, and the insulation would benefit me all seasons, since the sun bakes it in the summer. It's funny on the cold hardy, the roo that's doing the best is the one not even in the coop, who lives with the goats, my RIR Red. He for sure wins a coop full of his own ladies this summer if he makes it through the winter

On a very exciting note, my very first hatch is going amazingly well. Out of 42 in the circulated Hovabator with turner, 36 are developing great on day 15, we pulled one with a blood ring for sure, and 5 are suspect, but they are all darker eggs so we're just not sure. None are leaking/smelly so we seperated them to the top corner and left them in. We bought a Mini Maglight LED Pro to candle with and it really works awesome. All but one of my eggs look good, and the other 5 bad/not sure were from a lady down the road who has an even better roo/hen ratio than me, so go figure! El Guapo and the EE roo Owen (who truly reminds me of Owen Wilson) are sure doing their jobs! Good boys!

Yeah that is the first thing my dad bought for them when it turned really cold was a heated waterer(of course all we had was a mason jar waterer I picked up at an antique store to start them out with).

Yay for your eggs Susan!!

I know my birds have been loving the sun the last few days, even at 20 degrees outside, they are against the wall of one of the houses sunbathing, lol... I like seeing them out again scratching around, I think I'm getting cabin fever, lol...

I'm putting some of my own eggs into lockdown tonite!! I think I will end up with 3 or 4, we'll see when I candle... I'm going to wait another week or 2 and start collecting again to set some more of mine

One of my Mille Fleur Bantam Cochins has gone broody! I'm considering giving her golf balls. Right now she's even sitting on an empty nest. I'll put a few eggs in the incubator I bought a couple of weeks ago then give her the eggs just before they hatch so she can raise the chicks!

I'm amazed how well my chicks are doing out in this cold weather.

I haven't even opened up my coop for weeks! If you guys have hens venturing outside maybe I'll start opening the door again!

I recently got a nice friendly little hen that had lost the rest of her flock (of 2 or 3). Apparently they just disappeared without a trace. She's very sweet & I'm looking forward to her quarantine time being up!

I'm not having a good winter so far. We've lost one ewe, two lambs, and this morning one of my husbands shire mares out of a matched team died for no apparent reason. I just found her dead this morning. Sorry to put a downer on this thread, but I'm beside myself with grief and frustration at the moment and venting helps a little.

Oh Michelle! That is horrible, I feel so bad for you! Horses really become companions, and for that to happen so suddenly is just awful!
I sure hope you do not have any more losses. This winter had been so bitter, so many days of minus zero. I hope the end is coming soon--at least of the minus single digits. I am so sorry for your losses
