I finally got around to moving the coop outside of the Chicken Yard and boy was that ever a feat in itself, I forgot how heavy that coop was. my ingenius father put makeshift skids under it and we slid it to the spot where I wanted it (even though he didn't want me to move it), gotta love and respect that man. I was frozen and soaked ( it was cold and the ground was absolutely wet from all the snow/ice melt) so I am battling a slight cold, but other than that I feel very accomplished. I have plans for building a partition in the middle of the CY so I have 2 different sides (I knew there was a reason we kept the extra chicken wire), one for the layers and one for my breeding project. I hope to have Aragorn and his ladies in the new area by Valentine's Day

here's to hoping... I should have taken pictures of the process I went through getting the CY ready for moving the coop, made a temporary partition, picked up hidden dangers that were under the snow (thankfully none of the chickens got impaled by them or ate them), broke Ice (and the hose) to get the front panel of the CY off, played chase the chicken until they were on the other side of the partition (they kept sending "scouts" to patrol the perimeter to find a space to squeeze through, but failed miserably) and then made swiss cheese out of the chicken wire part of the front panel to get the coop up snug to the yard (looks rather nice if I do say so myself). I also put chicken wire on the bottom of the coop so anyone that comes over can view them without having to go into the enclosure(I have already had 2 escapes because of young ones wanting to look at the chickens and try to pet them. I will take a couple pictures of the finished product when I am out there next and show you guys.

Holy Cow! that sounds like quite the project. In the cold even, what a mess! You deserve a high five for all that work, way to go! I look forward to seeing how it all turns out IcyOldHen, your goats are so cute! I never thought about using them for packing things like that, that is a great idea! I would love to see Jewel if you do find a pic!

The great thing about packgoats is they can go where other pack animals can't. They will follow you so no need to hold a lead unless required in the area you're in. They eat along the trail so typically no need to pack food for them. And goats that like people are just fun!

Here are photos of Jewel and Hines when they were just a few months old. For some reason I'm just not have much luck finding photos of her.

These were taken at her first big camping trip in Washington. Hines, my very favorite goat, is also 2 years old this year and will start his packgoat training. Hines is the white goat. He is 3/4 Saanen and 1/4 Alpine.

I also have goats. Mine are Nigerian Dwarves. I miss my fresh milk! My doe Cocoa is due in June.

I *am* looking for an incubator if any of you want to trade for a deposit on a doeling or straight across for a wether.

Cheryll... how fun all those goats=) someday when I have those 20 acres I'd like I'll have a few goats, horses and most likely a turkey or 2, from Shawn's place of course

Moved the broody and her chickies into the garage today, I didn't want them in the house in the first place, and today it was OVER!! We couldn't take it anymore!! so in the garage they went, feeling sorry for themselves under the heat lamp... they'll be glad they're outside as soon as the melt accelerates!!

Thank You Dalooras, I am stiff and sore from doing that (the mucking out the "yard" was the hardest on my muscles I think), those trash cans get heavy when filled with nasty stinky hay...blech. It took 3 big wheeled trashcans to get all the nastiness cleaned up and boy did it stink, my hens loved me though when it was all said and done. Even though I am in pain and stiff it was well worth it.
