Idaho?

I have a question for everyone regarding herbicides. We free range our girls and along one of our fence lines our neighbor does not take care of the weeds on their side and they creep onto our side, nasty stuff like thistle. Last year my husband sprayed a herbicide he got from D&B that would not kill our pasture grass. Our girls are exposed to this stuff and I did not realize that they should be kept way from the area for 10 days is what the store associate told us. Locking our girls up in the coop is not an option to me, especially as the weather warms, the coop stays to warm and they have no exposure to the outdoors while in the coop. Is there something that is recommended that would be safe for our girls, kill the thistle weed and leave the grass alive, other then manual removal that is?

oh if i knew yew had a Khaki duck i could of adopted you harrold my old Khaki duck but i just took him back to were i adopted him.. he was a good boy he was actually a gaurd duck.. but thing is he likes to attack feet and pants and would litterly chase you.. he just got to much for me and he was constantly trying to mate with my chickens >< but he was fun for sure he loved car rides the most he would litterly sit in your lap and put his head out the window like a dog.. now i'm starting to miss my Khaki duck D: cant wait for you to post pictures of your coop once you get it all done!!!!! and yeah straw would be better then hay and shavings are just fine to use but they collect moister really fast to let ya know and mold quickly.. so i would recomend using dry straw you can get bales of it for like 3-5 bucks at D&B or you can buy them from farmers in the area i get mine from my neighbors next to my parents for like 4$ a bale..

go to zamzo's they have some sort of weed killer that is harmless to animals i dont remember what its called though.. but i remember hearing a add about it and them stating its wont harm your animals and they even said chickens cause how popular back yard chickens and stuff are becoming now

Would anyone around Meridian be interested in silkie roos? I ordered blues straight run, so I'm sure I will get some. Once they are old enough to sex, and I figure out what they are, they'd be free to whoever wants them! Shoot me a PM, so I don't lose who wants them. :)

Thanks, I will look into getting straw but probably will try to use all the pine shavings I got first. I bought a ton of them before I had decided to use sand in the main area.

So should I know by now if my 2 chicks are hens or roosters? They are going on 6 weeks old, Silver Laced Wyandottes. I was thinking hens and am still thinking hens. But my mom made the comment as we were working out back today that she thinks Marsala is a rooster because of the way her tail feathers are... that isn't a sign is it? If it was I would have to agree with her... they are up in the air like I see more roosters are... but when Gracie gets mad or fluffs up she puts hers into the same stance.

If I get some good photos up of them outside this evening do you think you all could help me?

So far neither of them have any growth of their waddle or the top oone... the name slipped my mind of what that one is... sorry lol

I have heard hay is too moist. Straw is better. :D Do you have a pond for the ducks? Just curious. :)

I don't - though it would be lovely to build one on our property. Ducky did have fun swimming today though. I got the ducks a larger water dish for that reason out in the run. We do plan on though, away from the run out between all of our trees digging a hole to place one of the kiddy pools in and placing it not all the way in the ground but just a touch so it isn't standing up so high and filling that for them and letting them out every few days to go take a swim and relax over there.

Actually I was told pine shavings are best to use as bedding in the coop because it helps keep bugs away, I currently use straw because it's all I have at the moment, I plan on getting pine shavings next time I make a feed store run. And usually if you post a picture of the bird in question there will be someone on here that can help you with wether or not it is a rooster or hen. Good luck

Welcome!!!

Mo5, I agree with birdguy, that RIR looks like a roo...

Fun to see so much more activity on the ID thread... last year days would pass sometimes between people posting... so I would just say...

Well, good night!!

Thank You you two. Any idea's on the other chicks I posted pictures of?

Picked up my wiring for the roof last night.

Dad also picked up another 2x4 because he didn't like the way the boy made the roost in our coop. He is going to redo it. It was just made very unstable and even though only 2 chickens will be roosting, full grown it may be even wobbly for them.

I bought my coop bedding. Sand on the ground and then in the nest boxes I was going to use the hay or pine shavings, would shavings be okay in the nest areas?

My goal today is to get a side of the run down (even though I already dug it 4in into the ground

) so we can get the coop inside of the run! Re-set the run up and then *hopefully* begin on the rooof a bit! If not the goal is most certainly have it up end of this week because my chicks and older duck are getting stressed being inside as my brooder isnt *that* big.

Oh! We also found Ducky a friend! Ducky is a 3week old Khaki, we finally found a little baby duck we named Peepers who is about 1 week old right now, a Pekin.

It wasn't from a boy in Boise was it? I ordered one from him and my dad and I had to fix the roof, cut a chicken door in one side and put latches on, not to mention the lid on the nesting boxes already has to be replaced because the wrong screws were used.

It was from a high school kid in Meridian and is a wonderful coop actually. The only thing we could see wrong - which really wasn't wrong was that there was no coop door so I am building one.

I'm sorry to hear about your experience! We were chancing it as well though so I am pretty surprised it didn't end up like that. My dad was going to help me build ourss but he just works too much so he looked it over after it was delivered and was pretty pleased besides the wobbly roost. But the roost was positioned wrong because I requested a full side opening door so I am sure he just wasn't sure how to do it since there wasn't a "wall" to place it on.
