Idaho?

Nooooooo! Now Star is apparently dying. What the heck is going on? Is this some sort of weird chick disease that I didn't notice with the other two because they were masked by other probable causes of death? She would have been 6 weeks old tomarrow so it isn't like she's still this fragile little thing. But she was acting normal this morning and now she's acting tired just like Patience did and is fading really fast. She was awake and peeping but not wanting to stand when I started typing this, now she keeps falling asleep. My 5 year old is holding her now. She was in her brooder so there is no possible accident that could have hurt her this time.

This was the one I hatched, so I'm extra sad. Also now that we no longer have any chicks, my husband probably is going to take his time deciding to make the 2 hour drive to Idaho Falls to get more. :(

If you can't make it I am going over and could pick chicks up for you...or I will also have some hatching next week.

It's not looking like I'll get to go, so that would be awesome.
My want list in order of preference is Welsummers, Australorps, Easter Eggers or Ameracaunas, and Blue Laced Red Wyandottes. 12 chicks maximum and $25ish spending limit.

Any maximum pref on any chicks or just a few of whatever I can find within that price range and quantity? I will also have some Easter egger in LF and bantam size hatching early next week.

I know I will have some EE's, a couple smooth blacks that were from a frizzle EE hatch, and a few fat little chipmunk female EE's from McMurray. I think Daloorashens said she has lots of EE's too :)

Surprise me. :D

After looking at the 2 breeds I have decided on Orpington now that I have a bred in mind my next project is a pen I have got a large 3 sided shed that is divided in half one half will be for my 2 does that I will be milking next year the other will be for the chickens. Chickens will be free ranged during the day but locked up at night Is there a problem with having goats so close to the chickens ? Right now the 2 sides are separated by field fencing I am concerned about lice that chickens can get? Should this be a concern?

Not sure if I am understanding your lice question correctly, but the lice that chickens get are specific to them.

.
I live in Nyssa, Oregon on the border of Idaho. about an hour from Boise I don't have any chickens yet but I am looking at Light Brahmas or Orpingtons I haven't decided which bred to go with. I don't if either one of these breeds would be good for a beginner or do any of you have a better suggestion I want to stay with the larger breeds.

Welcome!

I am fairly new to chickens as well, i have been looking at breeds that are decent layers but would also be classified as dual purpose. I have not tried Orpingtons or Light Brahmas yet. I have zeroed in on Australorps and Sussex as my next projects, because of comments about them being cold hardy and laying through the winter. I looked at orpingtons, but don't need a broody breed yet. (i was under the impression that was the main difference between them and the australorps).

I currently have Anconas (active and curious, lay med. eggs but not much during the winter), Sex Links (bit flighty but reliable layers, lg brown eggs), Rhode Island Red (flighty, VERY reliable layer large eggs) Austra White (reliable layer, med white eggs), Wyandotte (bully, lays med brown eggs), Polish bantam (bully, extremely noisy, small tan/white eggs, doesn't lay in the winter), Easter Egger (flighty, lg green eggs, fairly reliable layer).

I also adopted a bantam brahma, bantam cochin, and a mystery chick - all appear to be pullets but have not begun to lay (only 8 weeks old). The bantam cochin has the most docile personality of the three.

I would agree that large breeds are the way to go if you are selling eggs. the bantams appear to make good pets (well, except the polish, she is a NOISY bugger) but their eggs are about the size of my thumb :) I adopted the new birds before I learned they were bantams, but now we are attached to them, so I'm not quite sure what we are going to do.

I am also open to suggestions - eager to learn as much as I can.

*** on a side note - I've read that heritage breeds are more disease resistant, and are generally healthier than hybrids (easter eggers, sexlinks, etc) does anyone have insights? ***
