Idaho?

A lot of the birds from the spring and fall auction are from other folks than the IBBA members.  There have been some top quality birds there by some of the better breeders.  For beginners wanting to test out the chicken thing or people wanting pets it's great not to have to pay the high dollars.  I always bring a couple nice birds to donate.  Some one ended up with a nice pair of chocolates and a kid that wanting to show ended up with with a bantam Partridge Wyandotte Rooster I bought from Jerry Foley ( I paid 70.00 for the cockerel, the kid got him for 3 bucks...Theres always deals at every auction just got to wade thru....

If you are looking for all nice birds, the auction to go to is the one at the show.  They encourage only quality birds to be sold there.

Yes, entry's must be post marked by the 21st of august.  It is a double show (State plus a district show = more points)so will attract more birds from out of state.  I am the webmaster for the IBBA so read the stuff and ask questions as I am putting it up...

Oooh, I didn't know there was an auction at this one!

There's a raffle with lots of prizes, poster contest for the kids, a quiz bowl game, sales cages for those wanting to sell quality birds. It's not actually an auction but there is a section of rented cages for sales birds. This is a place it would be embarrassing to bring a cull bird to sell. After the show has been judged many of the show birds are forsale too.

There is a project hosted by the IBBA with prizes. Members and 4-h can get a chick to raise in the spring ($5.00) and show at this show. It is a learning experience for them to condition, train, and prep the birds. They all raise the same type of bird, this year it is Rhode Island Red Bantams.

It sounds like I need to go with someone more experienced than myself and my husband, lol. he was terrified that i was going to spend a chunk o change at the fall auction and quite relieved when i walked away disappointed. Your comment demonstrates one of many reasons why I'm trying to broaden our experience base and learn what is what. I would love to be able to spend time learning from what breeders are willing to share. I have to admit, i was getting frustrated at the fall auction until someone told us that a lot of people just unload there before having to winter the birds. I need to buddy up with someone who is willing to help us sift through, similar to browsing through the racks at Savers, lol, If I want to snag a sweet deal like that kid and his $3 show bird ;)

Chickenhill - thanks for keeping us informed!

I'm still on the hunt for my show silkie. Maybe I'll find one? I have 4 eggs from show lines hatching next week, but I won't be able to tell quality for a while.

Well I lost my silkie/ee cross roo today :-( he some how got out of the run and my heeler got him. He was such a cute lil guy. All the others got the wings trimmed tonight so it hopefully won't happen again

A lot of things can come into play when you are looking at chickens..The time of year for one. In the fall auction the year old birds were molting and look scraggly. Some of the young ones were showing promise but not old enough to see what they would look like as an adult...If there is a certain breed you are interested in go up to the booth and ask if might talk to the breeder or person that has them. Most chickie folks love to talk about their birds. If you go to the next one, I'll hang with yah. Or if you want at the show I would be happy to talk birds there to :) I am a bird brain, nothing on my brain but chickens... ahhhhhhhhhhhhh lol

Awe, sorry to hear of your loss. The bantams are so precious to our hearts.

You should go on the Utah thread and hit up one of those folks, some of them have very nice silkies. I am going to the show next week in UT and would be happy to bring them back if you find one or some. Can't wait to see your chicks. Silkie chicks are so adorable.

Does anybody use Nutrena Safechoice for Senior horses? If so, I have some extra buy one get one free coupons. I won't be able to use them all before they expire.

says you have until Oct 21st if I am reading it correctly. includes junior showmanship. I am planning on attending as a spectator  I know the auction wasn't anything fabulous, but we were told that the breeders "dump their junk" there. should see some good quality stuff at the show.

Marcie can I go with you to the chicken show when/if you go?

Thank you so much for posting this! Hubby said he would go with me! Woohoo!

Another question not related to the show, how would a younger Silkie or D'uccle rooster handle being with only large fowl hens, and how would they handle free ranging in say a half acre fenced area?
