Mamahumecky--So sorry for the tragedy & for your little boy's sadness! I wonder if your neighbors would tell you if that happened if you asked them & let them know you didn't consider the dog at fault if the chick was in their yard. Maybe not if they didn't communicate in the first place. Sad.

Mo5C--I'm very sorry you can't keep your chickens. That's hard! Best wishes in finding the pullets good homes.

yeah no i doubt they'd own up to it. just is the only explanation that makes sense. we searched our yard and my dogs were crated over night like they always are so there wasn't anything in my yard to do the damage to the bird and it was rather close to the fence so... i just wish things weren't so tight so i could get Ansel a new chicken. we are now down to four =o( this is the reason why i did NOT want to brood chicks in the cold and my first time in the cold cold..blah

Update on my brooder debacle. 3 of the chicks pulled through. I thought everything was good, but when I checked on them in the evening, one of them had died. I would bet it was because of the stress. Hypothermia and near death can do that to you, I assume. Anyway, 2 made it and seem to be doing well. I just hope a couple of the eggs still in the incubator hatch to make up for the loss.

Glad a few made it! That always freaks me out that the lights will go out.

We have a broody that I gave 7 chicks to a week ago, she is in heaven and the girls in the pen next door are so jealous. They pace back and forth and chatter to the chicks, quite hilarious. Today one of the chicks is plain gone. No clue where it went to. Kinda odd since they are in an enclosed pen. Kestrels have flown in my garage and taken chicks thru 2x4 wire but this is 1x2. The chick could have slipped through the wire but, even if it went into the next pen there is nowhere for it to go. Only thing I can think of is a bull snake or the bantams
in the next pen ate it, ewww...

On a lighter note...Took some pictures. Very much fun to watch the youngster mature. Blue Partridge Brahma

Is there a better way to make a brooder that does not involve a very fragile light bulb? Over the last year, every time I brooded babies some time the stupid bulb would go out, get loose, shatter everywhere or burn a baby. Anyone have some suggestions?

Yes, you can use ceramic reptile heaters. They screw in just like a light bulb, come in a variety of wattages and won't shatter.

Thanks, these are my first Brahmas. I love them! They are so huge yet so sweet. Lord pray none go rouge. The top of his back is up past my knee and I am 5'10"!

My uncle helped me butcher my 2 roo's tonight after the "girls" were all bedded down and none the wiser. It is a weird feeling seeing a chicken being slaughtered, one of them we had to behead him because even after snapping his neck he was flapping around and he couldn't walk, I felt so bad for him. Lesson I learned from this ..... Never ever look a rooster in the eyes after you slaughter him....he just had a sad look on his face. I am sure it will be easier seeing done when my dad and I get around to sorting the girls out and figuring out which are laying and which aren't, but that won't be for a while because half my flock is molting so it would be difficult to tell for sure.

The easiest way I have found to butcher a chicken is to wrap them in a towel to hold them. Hold them so their head is down. I will kind of pet their head to calm them. Then after about 5 mins, tak a sharp knife and just below the jaw, slit the juggler vein. They bleed out fast and just basically go to sleep. They don't flop around. They don't look sad. It's smooth and easy.
