Idaho?

Nutrena Country feeds is what we feed them, my dad also gets them Scratch that's the same brand. We tried giving them vege scraps etc, but all that did was lower the egg production. I am seriously thinking about just selling the whole project, coops and all. I will wait and see what happens in the spring.
I'm so sorry to hear about your losses. Winter is NOT fun. What are you feeding your chickens? Is there a way to stretch your feed budget while you try to downsize? A straight diet of commercial feed can get really expensive.

Egg production naturally goes up and down throughout the year. Sometimes it's related to diet and other times it's the hen taking a needed break. Some breeds will lay more eggs per year than others, too.

Got a huge quail egg today

... man that must have hurt!!

The eggs my quail are laying this season are too big to go into the quail rack in my turner! If I use the quail rack they end up getting broken. I wish there was a rack made for larger quail eggs but not as bit as the chicken egg rack.

super bummed - 2nd attempt at hatching failed. we did get 1 to pip, but nothing more :(

Working with fertile serama eggs. pullet has been laying for about 3 months.

we turn the eggs every 8 hours (all our schedule allows mon-friday). temp stayed fairly steady at 99.5 (we have a fan..) humidity bounced around 30-35 ish until lock-down, then we increased to 45%.

This was the set of eggs where the yolks were attached to the side of the egg. We have been trying to rotate our other fertile eggs so that doesn't happen again.

anyone have tips or suggestion?

I'm re-posting pics of our bator.. the rack is supported by mason jars filled with water. Our humidity is supplied by a pie tin that has a small hand-towel wadded in it to increase surface area.

Thanks in advance for help :)

Maybe they weren't turned often enough? How many made it to lockdown?

began with 6, 4 made to day 14, too dark to see on day 18 but I was iffy on 3 of them - left them in just to see what happened. the one that i thought would make it is the one that pipped :(

our breeding pair is being kept indoors. we left the last couple of eggs in with them to see what the reaction would be, so far the roo is actually more interested in them than the hen. he was sitting on them overnight,

would love to see the hen (Eve) go broody in the spring - pretty sure she would do a better job than i, lol.

If turning is the only issue you can think of - we are trying to re-evaluate our schedule to see if adjustments can be made. i do have a neighbor that is willing to come over and help turn, just cuz she would love to see them hatch ;)

I think you are thinking to much about it. How old are your breeding pair? My last hatch I didn't watch my temp very closely, I didn't monitor my humidity super close, and I only turned them once maybe twice a day. I had 6 out of 8 hatch. The difference between my first batch and my second was my breeders were older. I'm not convinced that the hatching process has to be as meticulous as people on here make it sound. My hatch rates have been more successful when I have less interaction, I let nature do its thing.

I know a guy who misplaced his egg basket outside after collecting. He found it 3 weeks later when he heard chicks peeping... lol

Ya, I had a dz of quail eggs sit in a carton for about 2 weeks in my pantry. I decided to put them in the bator and they hatched just fine. In fact 2 of them hatched before lock down.

You'd think eggs could handle a few degrees temperature change fairly often. When the hen gets up to move them or to go eat and drink they are exposed to whatever temperature it is outside for several minutes at a time which also changes humidity...
