I may have to hit you up for some mountain quail hatching eggs.

I am building up my folk on these right now so i dont have any at this time. my female started laying way early this year and most her eggs froze. only had one that didnt break. and this is it so far. she laid 7 eggs and quit.

It's been a while since I've had chickens. In 11 more days, I'll pick up two Golden Sex links and Two Red Sex Links from Dunlap Hatchery in Caldwell. I'm also looking into getting two additional chicks that would have a longer and more spread out egg production cycle. I'm possibly looking at Rhode Island Reds. What others should I consider that have a calm disposition?

That's ok. I wouldn't be in the market till probably some time this summer anyway.

Black Australorps

They look like a neat bird to have. So far, in order, my alternatives are the Black Australops and Rhode Island Reds. What others should I consider?

Orpingtons are super mellow too, and Cochins, but cochins go broody more. But they are so cute

Personally I really like Barred Rocks, for great laying and mellow disposition.

So far, I think my tentative order of preference might be Australops, Orpingtons, Barred Rocks, then Rhode Islands Reds. Is the Barred Rock more of a long term layer or a dual purpose bird? I would be worried about the Cochins being in with the others, with them being a smaller bird. Also, because I was looking more at bird with a longer egg production cycle, I hadn't thought about dual purpose chickens as much. I'll need to do some more research.

BR are great layers, and DP if you want the meat later on...they don't burn out fast like the sex links.... Some places have better ones than others. Also you can get big Cochins too. Very fluffy!
Australorps are very sweet also, I love their feathers in the sunshine. And the big dark eyes. I have had two and they were both very very sweet. RIR not so much they can be frequently ornery, or so I have read, I have had three total of those and rehomed all of them for picking on others. I am sure there are good ones out there, but I have not met one yet. I will probably try another one someday just to see.

I have a cochin and a Mille fleur d'uccle in with my LF flock and they do just fine. None of the others give them trouble
