Oh man... wish I was knitting right now... I would trade you for something.. I don't have an incubator, either=) I think that's what I'm asking for for Christmas=)

Lisa... haha, I love the UTah thread.. I just have a feeling there are lots of Idahoans with lots of birds and resources and knowlege that we can tap!! Hopefully your friends call Michelle and help her out with her cockerels..

Maybe we could get this going by telling a little about ourselves... I'll start...

I live in Idaho Falls, grew up here, too. I asked my parents if I could have chickens when I was a teenager and they said yes (they must have known it would be a good way to keep me off the streets=) I didn't know much about the different kinds of chickens, I learned a lot about taking care of them, though... I had some Leghorn hens and rooster, BR hens, RIR hens and bantam cochin hens and rooster... never incubated, just put the eggs I wanted under the broody bantams... Loved those chickens, Mom always knew if I wasn't in the house I was probably out in the coop.. had rabbits out there, too..

Fast-forward 20 years and I'm now married with young kiddos (we're late-bloomers, DH and I) and I kept telling DH we were eventually going to get chickens... He, of course was resistant... In April, I asked a friend of mine at work who has chickens how many she has right now... she said," I have 60!! Too many!! I hatched out a bunch of eggs last fall and then had some hens go broody late in the year.. time to put them in the freezer!!" I asked how long she would give me to get some before processing them... and 2 weeks later I had 12 hens, some laying, some about to lay.. 6 went to my mom's house (she can have roosters)...

DH decided he would like the challenge of building a coop, and did an awesome job from scratch... Meanwhile, I had found this site where he had found a plan for a coop and discovered how many amazing kinds of chickens there were!! I was amazed and excited!! Silver chickens, lavender chickens, blue chickens, chocolate eggs, blue eggs, green eggs!! Then chickenstock... then chicken math ensued and I have 26 chickens (only 4 meet the definition of being a hen a year or older=)..

And now the plan is to expand the coop at my mom's house and hopefully be able to start breeding... Blue and Black Marans, Wheaten (Blue and splash included) Ameracaunas and hopefully I can find some Swedish Flower Hens after I have mastered incubating=)

My name is Beth and I live in Harpster, Idaho which is North Central... just north of the Salmon river. South Fork of the Clearwater river is home and towns in this area include Elk City, Grangeville, Kooskia, Kamiah. Lewiston is the nearest "big town"... where a person goes to get a McDonalds, CostCo, clothes shopping, etc. We are very rural... you have to get used to driving everywhere to get anything. Lots of trips to Spokane, Boise, Missoula....

I have 31 chickens from Pawtraitart, 27 Blue Orpingtons and 4 FCBM. I have two other smal flocks, one is a collection of 9 mixed breeds and one is a collection of 8 heritage breeds... my fave out of all are the gold laced wyandotte hen and the Orpington Roo who is cross between Buff and Blue. He is so gorgeous. Each year I also raise at least 25 meat birds, used to be Freedom Rangers but this year it will be all the extra cockerels from pens. Most of my birds "free range" either totally free or within electronetting. It is a joy to have the older ones putzing around.

I craved talking chicken to people. I've raised them for 6 years now. I sell the extra eggs and incubated my first batch this year for a friend. Awesome.

I just became a Master Gardener through the UofI out of Moscow Idaho. Gardening is my other passion!! I think I have a lot in common with many of you.

Hope to get to know more of you. Been on the site since 2008, even though I don't say much.

My name is Susan and I live in Hauser which is about 15 min outside of Coeur d'Alene. I'm new to chickens, but rapidly developing an understanding of Chicken Math. I have 5 hens, 6 pullets, 1 roo, 4 cockerels (3 of which were supposed to be pullets...learning lesson!) and I'm probably picking up another pullet tomorrow.

I also have a husband, daughter, grumpy old man cat, and our Vizsla. In the pasture we have four Angora goats and a llama. I'm a knitter, spinner and dyer and sell my fiber online and at local shows. I love to garden too, but passionatly hate weeds. It gives me such satisfaction to give them to the chickens!!!

Wow I love to hear about people! We have a cabin in the Trail Creek area---north of Sun valley on the way to Mackay/Challis. LOVE central Idaho, my very favorite country right there, we like to drive over th Challis and Salmon and go camping and fishing/ LOVE to garden, that would be awesome to be a Master Gardener! Now I have a good person to ask questions....haha :)

I like to incubate eggs too, and have some cute girls I just got this year from pawtraitart also. Looking forward to my first dark brown eggs.

hear ya on the weeds! My garden has been over run this year, the weather has been so warm so early :idunno

Could you post a link for your yarn that you sell? I like to knit in the cold months :D I will check it out!
