Yeah, whispers... that sounds about right on those huckleberries... I have seen the seeds for sale on another heritage seed website besides Bakers... can't remember the name... in Missouri...

Okay... more questions for everybody...

Who here uses Diatomeceous Earth (sp?) in their runs/nest boxes?? And/or what else do you use to disinfect/prevent bugs?? They are talking about the DE a lot on the UT thread, and I have seen some of the articles on here about it, so now I'm curious how many of you use it??

AND... how many of you are still incubating right now?? Again, those silly UT people are all setting eggs this weekend.. they are crazy on there, seriously!! (But still glad to call them friends=) (esp. Lisa, lol)

Daloorashens--Ha ha Cynthia is trying her darndest to lure my bator out of the closet. I am resisting, not very strongly, getting weaker. There are 8 different breeds being hatched last I counted, I think they are crazy. There will be more by morning now I am sure with Wendy she will join in. Hatching season in Utah = all months that have a vowel in them. I just got all my chicks out of the garage, that did not last long! Did you see those white polish with black crests and black polka dots? Good grief.

Such enablers on that thread, eh?! Glad you join in for the fun.

I LOVE DE, just to put in my two cents. I also use cayenne pepper as a natural dewormer ( chickens have no heat receptors) feed it to them with their feed, spread DE in the coop/run/nests and pat them down with it occasionally to get rid of/protect them agains lice and mites. Never seen a bug on mine. Ever. Totally organic too. No chemicals.

I have some DE I bought for using on the chickens when I found they had lice. In my opinion, DE is not meant to control or kill a current lice problem. I used back in February when I brought my hen indoors who was ill. I saw the lice on her and dusted her with DE and it didn't seem to do anything. So I bought some Poultry and Garden Dust and dusted her with that several days later and watched the lice litterally drop dead off of her. I think DE is good for killing them before they become to much of a problem. I also read that you can mix the food grade DE into their feed to help intestinal worms but haven't gotten around to it. I also like that it is safe to use around my cat's when trying to control other insects around the place. Just be sure to not breath it in when applying it!

No more hatching this season for me! Well....except for a duck hen who is sitting on her eggs.....and maybe a couple bantam cochin eggs one of my girls is setting. But.....my incubators are OFF!!! :)

Went to Cal Ranch yesterday. There are soooooooo many chicks left from their Summer Chick Days promotion! I knew that would happen. It was too late in the season for them to bring in so many. I hope they all find homes soon. They are getting too big to be crowded into those bins. Plus...they are supposed to be all pullets but I saw quite a few boys in there.

I heard that CAL Ranch here had lots of chicks left over, too.... It's just the bantams that tempt me=)

Hmmm.. those girls in UT incubating now... it's still stumping me=)

haha, hoping for some more eggs from the girls since it hasn't been quite as hot=)

Becca, it seems I've read the same about treating for lice... DE is better for prevention, use the real dust if they have an active infestation...

Lisa... so, when are you hatching??

Oh sure ya ya ha ha taunting me continues on the Idaho thread as well...I am NOT hatching. NOT. :old

This post will self destruct so as not to leave evidence that I said that and make me look like a dang fool should I cave in....
