Ideal Hatchery Questions

Ross,

I saw your reply on BYC. I was told when I spoke with Ideal on Friday, that you were aware of the situation and all I needed to do was send you a pic and you would be 100% able to ID the breed. If the birds are not Hamburgs, then they are not standard breeds, but bantams, because there aren't any other small standard birds that fit the colors of these birds. Hamburgs are the smallest birds that Ideal has in the standards. It also showed that they were in stock at Privett Hatchery, as of Friday (12-10-10)

These birds are quite a bit smaller than the other birds in the order are. We ordered 30 standard surprise pullets. 14 of them are the tiny mystery chicks that are yellow and blue with black on the back. They are feathering out white and black and look to have slate legs. We received 6 Ameraucanas, 3 Leghorns, 3 black Austrolops, 2 Partridge Rocks, and 2 chipmunk ones (poss. dark cornish?). The mystery chicks are half the size of the Leghorns, which are the next smallest birds.

I need to know if I received the right order. It doesn't look like I did. I know that we took a gamble ordering the standard surprise mix, but we really expected standard birds. I don't think that is unreasonable. I also expected to get my birds from Ideal, not Privett. We wouldn't have ordered if we had known they were coming from so far away.

Will I really have to wait until these birds are fully feathered to find out if they are the correct birds? What then? Will you ship new birds or credit my order?

Thank you,

Shelly

I've ordered from them quite a few times, and currently have an order with them for OEGB's next month. I had one shipment where most of the chicks were dead, Cornish X's, which was very sad, but they were quick to send replacements. Otherwise, my birds have been happy and healthy. I especially like my Easter eggers from them! Nice assortment of colors, and pretty blue and green eggs.

I have to agree with Denafarm, if you want Marans that lay dark eggs you'll have to breed for them yourself. No breeder IMO can guarantee the dark eggs you seek. Mine from Ideal did not lay dark enough and I bought 3 and a roo from a private breeder and only one lays a dark enough egg for my liking.

They have always treated me good so far, I have ordered from them several times and plan to do so again in the near future. Yes the birds are not "Show" quality, but mine are great layers. I usually get a few extras, mostly males. They also gave me an extra guinea! Very Pleased!

ordered 30 red broilers, 20 ducks, and 6 turkeys early this week from ideal. they shipped wed and were here in less than 24 hours. they did have a bit of a mix up with my order only charged for 25 red broiler and sent exactly 25 broilers, charged for 20 ducks and sent 10, sent all 6 turkeys and two were doa. i called they answered right away and next week are sending 2 replacement turkeys, the 10 ducks they forgot to put in the box and added on the 5 red broilers at the same charge as they would have been last week because i was only charged for 25 and 25 sent but had ask for 30. they were boxed very well all seem very healthy (except the 2 doa turkeys). i was a little irritated about the ones left out and charged for but they are makeing it right and were friendly about it. they all still look good this morning and are eating and drinking. i didnt use any grow gel, in the past hasnt seemed to make a diference.

I have ordered from Ideal twice. The first time I ordered 15 chicks and the second time I ordered 11. In my first batch I was sent 5 males for warmth and the second time I decided to do insurance only. All of my chickens arrived healthy and thus far none of them have died (the first batch is a week and a few days old and the second batch is only a few days old). Thus far, I haven't had any problems.

My first order from Ideal was for ten bantam cochins. They included 15 barred rock males as packing peanuts. Boy was I surprised to see how full the box was! When they were big enough, we butchered all the packing peanuts and canned them up in jars. Yummy! I really appreciated all those little roosters in the end...
