Ideal Poultry v.s. Meyer Hatchery

D: Aw man I've been told how great they are and now that you've shared your experience I'll never see them the same way again!

Has anyone ever tried McMurray?
My family has. They were pretty good but all but one died of within a weak then the survivor has breathing issues. We contacted them and they thought that the post office had put them outside because of the chirping, which I can believe. We got a refund instead of credit.

That's good! Well, them being nice about it, not the post office possibly putting the chicks outside.

Depending on where you live, you could do a google search and look for someone that'll ship to you.

Keep in mind - 99% of the time, if chicks arrive DOA or weak/faltering, it's most likely the shipping that did them in, not the the hatchery. Just think of how many people have to handle that box of chicks, how many trucks/planes it rides in and all the temperature changes along the way. The hatchery has no control over that.
Now, if your chicks show up deformed, diseased or looking like the wrong breeds - that is the hatchery's control.

It sounds like you think exactly the way the hatchery wants you to think, blame everything on someone else. My chicks did not get yolk sac infections from the shipping. These chicks were infected from fecal matter either in the incubator or hatcher, or they came from dirty nest boxes or floor eggs. The hatchery points a finger at the only other people who have been in contact with the chicks, and most of the time it works because hardly anyone will do what I did and spend the money to have the dead birds tested.

I've ordered from Murray McMurray on several occasions and have been happy with their chicks and service. I've lost chick or two in shipping each time, but since theyv'e always put 2 or 3 extras in the box, I got what I paid for. There chicks have been good quality as well for a hatchery. In fact, the only birds I ever had win anything in a show were a pair of Mille Fleur D'Uccles (male and female) from Murray McMurray years ago. They took best in show at the Hunt County fair and no one was more shocked than I was. Who would've thought it.)

I was so close one time from getting some from McMurray. Maybe in the summer or spring I'll get a few from there, I'll be down to a small amount anyways because I'll more than likely get a lot of little roos this time lol

I've ordered from both Meyer and Ideal, and have never lost a chick during shipping. All of my chicks from both hatcheries grew up healthy and looked nice. While Meyer is more expensive, it does give the option of placing a very small order, as they will include a heat pack in the shipping box to keep the chicks warm. Ideal doesn't do this. Instead, Ideal includes "extra males for warmth", which is exactly what it sounds like. When I placed an order with Ideal for 7 pullets, I ALSO received 8 Rhode Island Red cockerels. It's really a pain to re-home males!

I got a a heating pack this time, but you're right--extras are a big pain to find homes for. It took me just up until last week to get rid of the rest of the barred rocks that I had received.

Thank you for sharing this. I didn't know Ideal used heat packs. I wonder if this is something they do during the really cold months . . . or when people specify "no extra males for warmth"? Their shipping rates are very reasonable, so I'd be willing to pay another couple of dollars to have the heat pack rather than the males to keep the chicks warm.

That would be nice, I didn't specify last time and that's probably why I had 7 extra chicks. This time I got a heat pack and I had ordered 25 bantams. Well, I think they mixed one up because it looks like a standard but that's ok because its feather legged and that's what I wanted for the majority anyways.
