i am going to be ordering chickens soon and was debating on using either My Pet Chicken or Ideal Poultry. has anyone ordered from either of them? what was your experience like? quality of birds? price? amount of DOA ect. i am wanting to get some bantams (~6-8)

any opinions would be very helpful. thanks!

I've ordered from both. Keep in mind that Ideal is a hatchery while My Pet Chicken is just a drop shipper.

Quality - if you order from a hatchery, you're going to get hatchery quality birds. If quality is important to you, you're definitely better off looking for a breeder of the breeds in which you are interested, and buying from them instead.

When I got mine I got 4 chickens from Murray McMurray hatchery (someone I know were getting some and I asked if I could get a couple on their order) and then the rest from a local farm store, but when I get more I plan on getting them at My Pet Chicken, just thought I would say that so really I don't know which is better sorry.

Ideal is a nice commercial hatchery, My Pet Chicken as HEChicken said is a drop shipper that usually gets their birds from Meyer Hatchery, so you may want to go directly to Meyer to order if they have everything you want. If you are looking for hatchery birds, I would consider posting on your State thread and asking people in your area where they have had good luck ordering from. It seems that most problems with shipments are due to the USPS handling/shipping routes the chicks have to take, so if you can figure out which hatcheries have the best service to your area, it may help you make a decision... especially when shipping bantams.

Bantams are so much smaller chicks/birds they are not as tough as standards and don't handle shipping as well often.

MPC get some of their birds from Meyers. Others they raise themselves.

The thing I like about MPC is that you don't get packing peanut roos in with your oder if you place a smaller order. I plan on getting 5-6 chicks from them. If I placed the same order with Ideal I would end up with 15 males that I would need to do something with.

I ended up ordering directly from Meyer and now all i gotta do is wait! so excited! i ordered 7 from the feathered feet banties

I ordered from Meyer hatchery first time, I am not getting my chicks until July next year (ordered Penedesencas), what I like about hatcheries is that you can order females and also they can be vaccinated for Mareks. Of course there is still a chance that you can get a roo but is a risk that we have to take. I ordered chicks from a breeder this year and because breeders don't sex their chicks I ended up with 11 roos out of a batch of 20. I am very happy with the quality of my chicks (ameraucanas) they are absolutely healthy and beautiful, I kept 2 of the roos and they are gorgeous.
I read about Meyer Hatchery in BYC and saw some good reviews, I did not know that MyPetChicken gets some of their chicks from them, I was thinking about ordering my penedesencas thru them but now I am glad I am getting them from their source.

I called MPC and when I spoke to them their shipping prices were less and their bird prices were about the same. They both have pretty much the same breeds.
