If a dog killed any of my chickens I hope someone would be

When did chickens become the equivalent of gold bars?

I free range my chickens. I assume all the risk and responsibility for killing predators and realize that one day the flock can be wiped out by a stray dog. I don't think spending thousands of dollars on fencing to protect $5 chickens makes any sense. That said, I did buy a gun and a game cam to help with the predators because I enjoy raising chickens.

Because I think that way, you won't catch me on BYC crying or asking for prayers for my chickens.

I also wouldn't be murdering the neighbors dog unless he was a repeat offender (coming onto my property) and his owner was aqequately warned.

But PC, you went a little overboard and are being a little intolerant. Some folks love their chickens as much as a family dog or cat or a family member. I'm not going to comment on that, but I will say that they find BYC as a place where they can get comfort regardless of the circumstances of their chicken deaths. If it helps them to talk about it, so be it.

That's not our thing obviously but c'est la vie....

Really, when you think about it, letting your dog eat your chickens is probably cheaper than buying some top end dog food brands...

Maybe the "Old school teacher lady" needs some help with her fence?? Could this be a good time to be a good neighbor and lend a helping hand??

She probably thinks her hound dog is just a lazy quiet dog that won't cause any problems.

she does need help,, and her lazy 30 year old son living with her should do something,,, as for me,, my broken neck says i do enough work at my house,,,, i do my "helping" part by taking her dog back to her

Ok. So you don't help her because you think her son is "lazy". Ok.
That's unique. Sorry about your broken neck. Hope the healing process is going well.

By the way, folks. The posting about the cost of fencing skyrocketing is something we've had to deal with in our trek to protect and fence our property. We discovered there are places that sell used fencing of all types. And, we discovered free fencing == fencing that's left after new fencing is installed somewhere. I also got 9 bags of cement for $1 a bag (60 lbs ea).

Fencing is a misery but can be an exciting adventure to remedy. Now if we can figure out a way to make installing fencing an adventure, we'll have it made!

PC, Good to see this post. We lost our first EE yesterday. Our fault. Thought all the chickens were penned up before leaving for a Thanksgiving get together, came home checked for eggs and did a head count one chicken missing. Apparently, she was left out. Can't blame our dog. Kids weren't happy but knew things like this can happen. It is part of the life cycle. Accept it and move on.

Bravo Brother. Almost all of us lose chickens. It's part of having them.
Even though people think I may be evil I do feel for you and your family
losing chickens. No one wants that.

I don't want to come across sounding that way. I understand chickens
are part of many of our families.

Any member here can PM me or post they lost a chicken. I am always
willing to help. If you are close I will drive to home and help build a
secure coop. You provide the food and beer.

Losing a loved animal is difficult regardless of who's "fault" it is. No one
is disputing that and we are all here to help.

There does seem to be a trend in this country to not accept personal
responisibility for what happens to our animals, and even our families.
That is a problem.

My chickens free range. I've done it for almost a year with no losses to predators. (except one that wandered away never to be seen again.) If a dog killed my chickens, I would shoot it. Period. If you don't want your dog shot, don't let it run around the neighborhood. If my dog goes to someone else's house and kills their livestock, I would expect it to get shot. I like my chickens. I like my dog. It is well within mine or anyone else's rights in the state of Idaho to kill a dog that is harassing or destroying your livestock. In addition to that, the owner of the dog is liable for the damages.
Am I going to blame myself for the chickens dying? In a way, but because I free range it is a risk I take. My chickens don't leave my property so my neighbor's dogs shouldn't leave his.

I work with a moron who showed up one day this spring mad because his neighbor shot his two siberian huskies. His huskies killed all his neighbor's turkeys. He was furious his dogs had been destroyed. I asked him why he thought it was ok to let his dogs run free and get into other people's animals. He never had a decent answer for that other than to tell me the dogs were worth more than the turkeys. I told him that if they were worth that much to him he should have kept them home.

I know that by free ranging I take the risk of losing birds, but people should take notice that by "free ranging" their dogs, they take a risk of losing them as well.

How did bags of concrete, fencing, and a goodwill message about your broken neck lead to you demanding "don't EVER question me NOT helping people etc"??

What is PM??

Calm down. Nobody is making this "personal".

I'm getting lost in the commas...

Have a good day.
