I forgot about that! He marks his territory as soon as he gets home! I wonder if he holds it all day so he can mark more area?

Ive got a few thoughts on this subject.

When I first moved to this 10 acres, the first thing I did was perimeter fence the property. I have 2 shelties that are the most dear things in my life, and their health, safety and well being are the most important things to me. I have 10 acres, all the neighbors for miles around have 10 acres, and are all for the most part very responsible land owners. That being said, I know that even with the fencing that some sort of critter can still get in if it wants to bad enough. I didnt fence to keep my guys in, I fenced to keep varmints that can hurt them out. And even with that, I go outside with them when they are out; they never go out alone.

So I got chickens. It was never ever my intention to free range my chickens. I could have...I have a lovely fenced 10 acres, but I knew Id sooner or later lose some to predators, and Im not willing to take that risk. I put up chain link runs for them, covered the runs with wire fencing, and ran hardware cloth inside the chain link. I feel pretty secure that nothing can get to them. Its possible a dog could dig under my perimeter fence and get into the yard, if so he'd also have to chew thru the chain link, and Im not sure he could. The only thing I feel I have to worry about is a bear, which we dont have here. If a dog did get into my yard and I felt threatened or my animals were threatened Id be within my legal rights to shoot that dog, and probably would.

Theres a fine line between your legal rights and protecting your animals. You are well within your legal rights to free range your chickens, and you can make all the valid points that you want about the neighbors dogs dont belong on your property, and you can shoot them if they stray your way. Im not willing to take that chance just because Im in the right and the dog owner is in the wrong. It is more important to me to protect my animals any way that I can and know I have done all that I can do to protect them, rather than to stand on principle, free range my chickens, and when disaster happens (and it will, whether a dog, coyote, hawk, whatever), whine and cry and stamp my feet and blame the dog owner over a bunch of dead carcasses, declaring they had no right to be there. I would rather prevent the situation before it ever happens. The safety of my animals is worth it to me.

Great thread... lots of laughs and thought provoking comments.

My guys pee all around our chicken coop/run also... I truly believe it helps and, being guys, they are more than happy to oblige my request.

P.S. I'm praying for PC that he never has any urinary track issues or his chickens will be fair game for all.....
