If I had a sheep get onto my property and eat my flowers, I would be a bit upset, but I'm a fence person, so it's not a as likely to happen. When neighborhood dogs started to use my front lawn as a toilet, I didn't freak out at them, I built a fence. If a person does not want domesic animals of some sort wandering their property, it should be well fenced. Cats are of course excluded from this-they poo where ever they want!

If the problem keeps happening, ie dead chickens, it's time to figure out a better coop and run for them. People will continue to be irresposible pet owners (dogs), and I'm not going to just wait around for it to happen again. I mean you made an effort to contain your sheep, but the other person might not-then Doug would be dealing with the same problem!

I'm not saying I wouldn't be furious if something killed my chickens, I would, but if they were free range in the country, I would expect it to happen at some point.

When I decided to hatch and have chickens I knew the guy next door turned his dogs loose at about 5 am (he stopped turning them loose to run all day and night when I started hanging on to them and calling him at 3am that is loose dogs where on my porch come and get them). Now he doesn't do it all the time but still he turns them loose for a couple hours 3 or 4 x's a week at 5am. So I put an electric fence all around the houses and pens when I put my chicks out. Well when my chickens where 11 weeks old he turned her loose and she went right thru the electric fence and tore the pens apart and got 18 of my chickens.

I went next door and he was coming back from putting her on a chain and she had feathers all over her mouth and I said, hey Randy your dog just killed 18 of my chickens. He's like no no not my dog she's been tied up all night. I am like really nice feathers she wearing on her mouth. He then said that it wasn't his dog but he understood how I felt because he had turned loose a bunch of rabbits and they were all dead now. I am like sorry Randy but you don't know how I feel so let me tell you how I feel. My chickens were in my yard protected by an electric fence and another fence. Your rabbits were turned loose to run the neighbor hood just like your dogs.

I then went home and called everyone on the road told them I was hooking my electric fence up to 110 and that they should not go to the back yard and I told the only family with kids the same thing. Everyone got together and wrote him a letter telling him they were shooting his dogs if they seen them in their yards again. Then they came to my house to see if I needed help and to say sorry.

His dog hits that 110 fence at least every other day. I patrol that fence 3 and 4 times a day to make sure nothing is touching it and that my chickens are safe. I even am out there shoveling when the snow is flying so that it doesn't build up. Will it happen again maybe, will it be my fault no. I do the best I can with what I got and I learn from my mistakes.

I never posted this as a dog killed my chickens thread. I have mentioned it on a thread or two but never posted it by itself. Why because even as a newbie I knew that some smartie would come on and say it was my fault and I felt low enough with out someone coming on pointing the finger at me for failing to protect what was mine to protect.

Nothing is a given you can have the best set up in the world and things can happen. When your compassion for the person it happens to stops, well then what happened to you. Everyone should be able to come on here and post for support, doesn't matter who's fault it was. A little compassion goes a long way, farther than a well it's your fault build a better fence next time.

Thanks for letting me express my opinion like always it is mine and I don't expect anyone to share, but please respect it like I have respected yours.

A dogs owner is responsible for their dogs action. I've gone through great expense fencing my property. A persistent dog will get through if it keeps on trying. Someones domestic pet is not on the same page as a wild animal. In my book, if a dogs owner is stupid enough to let there dogs run at the expense of others livestock, too bad for poochy if it happens more than one time.
If a wild predator gets my hens, thats my problem, its silly to say the same for someones roaming killer dog...Dogs are fed at home, raccoons, hawks, etc aren't...!

I know that by free ranging I take the risk of losing birds, but people should take notice that by "free ranging" their dogs, they take a risk of losing them as well.

Well-said, Jared. I agree completely.

From reading this whole post, I'm glad some of you are not my neighbors as you have no problem w/your dog coming on my place and killing my chickens. It's my fault,,,,wow. One warning, one call to police, then dead dog--SSS.

In Indiana, your dogs would also be after my neighbors' cattle or is it their fault because their pastures are not "dog proof". What about their hogs, sheep, goats, etc????? What if my kids are playing on our acreage, my problem? You do realize you are financially responsible for your dog, kids, etc.

I really don't understand this logic at all. Dogs doing destruction on my place are not my fault--only if I allow it to continue. This is a pet peeve of all farmers I work with, people move in the country and think all land is free for them and their animals/4 wheelers, etc to use.

My BA roo got killed Monday by my own hunting dog. Yes I was upset and shared it. BUT I never did blame the dog. He is a bird dog and was doing what comes naturally. He pushed through the fencing so now I have it reinforced. I now stay outside and supervise when I let him and my other one run loose. And on a side note, I think my roo cussed the dog out or somethin because they really hated eachother. Constantly bickering back and forth. My dog never tried to go for my birds until this roo. I'm not going to get rid of my dog but I am picking up a new roo on Monday.

PC, i hear ya!..It IS our fault....the humans..NOT the dogs or cats or whatever..., i recently lost 2 button quail (you know this already)...to my cats...he stuck his paw right in the cage and pulled 2 of them out..piece by piece..

..and yes, i was VERY upset and heartbroken...did i blame my cats?..NOPE!..it was my fault!...my cat was just simply being a CAT....how can people kill these pets (theirs or other peoples?)...when the animal is just doing what it IS SUPPOSED TO DO!..or what IT THINKS it is supposed to do anyways....now, if the dog keeps coming back....bring it to the shelter...call the police(and file a compliant), put an ad in the paper find it a new home(even if its not yours...

..)...there are ALOT of other options other than killing the animal(and i am talking about pets here..not wild predators)...but, i would like to also add..i think people still should feel free to post on here about their losses, and their hurt about having their chickens attacked/killed....i just hate it when it turns into the DOGS fault!..makes me sick, really...peace, Wendy..

This I understand as you have made decision to own a predator and then keep what it eats as a pet. Same w/bird dogs (been there done that w/Brittney spaniels).

I should not be held liable for decisions you have made. You want dogs, they come on my place and cause problems, expect a huge bill. In Indiana, your pet on my place, I can shoot it legally. Be a law abiding, good citizen and all is well.
