If a person cannot spell, would you still sell birds to them??

I don't sell to flakes, even if the dollar amount is zero. Its always a pain in the tuchus to deal with flakes and I always end up regretting it.

1. If your CL ad said $20, someone contact you asking you to give it to him for free is rude and an annoyance. The price has been set and unless he offers a decent barter, he shouldn't have contacted you.

2. I don't care if it is text lingo. That's not how you acquit yourself online or in business. Ugh. Just no.

3. If he does have a learning disability, its on him to work on it and to use spellcheck, etc. to tidy up his communications before subjecting the rest of us to the illegibility of poor communication.

4. The whole scenario is bizarre. He's giving it to his brother to do what? Douse it and set it on fire? Why isn't his brother paying you the $20?

Too many warning bells. Don't do it.

Man, i think youre wording that wrong and its pretty offensive... intelligent people can be bad at spelling. Also i make all of my e-mails by phone. Your issue is that he uses the "text" form of writing which has nothing to do with intelligence.

I don't think choosing to message in "Text talk" really has anything to do with his intelligence. Many people text so often that they type like that without even knowing. If you educated him in the proper way to take care of him I don't think it would be a issue. I do think it's a little unfair for him to ask for him for free. If he can't afford the bird at a reasonable price I would be afraid he couldn't afford to properly feed him later down the road.

Thats more my thing. if he cant afford a 20 dollar bird how can he afford feed?

Yeah I'd sell to him regardless of his spelling, just because one can't spell doesn't mean you know more than they do. My dad isn't that great of a speller, but he makes neon and knows more about that, chickens, mechanics, and computers than most people I've known pretty much. I'd feel kind of self-righteous looking down on them and assuming a person ignorant of everything because they can't spell.


I say, everyone has an expertise and can teach within their right. We can easily make ourselves ignorant by assuming we know more than they because of our area of expertise. You never know, he may be more knowledgeable about poultry than you are..

Then again, he could be someone who has no poultry knowledge. Either way, present for his brother leaves room for "Does his brother know how to take care of poultry?" as well as- "Being Craigslist, is it a scammer?"


I don't intend to come off as harsh, but I am blunt at times.

i would feel nervous if someone is pressuring you for a free rooster when you have a price on him and you feel he is worth that price. if the roo if pure bred i would hold out for a better buyer. if someone is really interested they will learn to spell properly and show serious interest in this rooster. also, i would not buy a bird as a present for someone just like any animal as a gift.

i also don't like to use the term 'cull' when posting since most people think you are going to kill the bird. 'cull' can also mean you are going to re-home it away from your current breeders.

So, from your perspective chickens ought to be pretty close to extinct, since universal literacy is a fairly new state of affairs. In the recent past MOST people were completely illiterate, yet they managed to not only raise chickens but also develop specific breeds for specific purposes, as well as do a whole bunch of other things, like raise children, build houses, plant crops, and just generally keep the world going. Seriously, judging this person's ability to care for chickens according to his ability to spell is not only narrow minded, but quite frankly, a bit arrogant! For all you know he's dyslexic, and many dyslexic people are of higher than average intelligence despite their reading "disability." From where I sit, basing your concerns on his spelling alone says far more about you than it does him!

I might let the spelling go, but if you are asking $20, you have every right to stick to that amount.

It shouldn't matter that the guy can't spell, IMO. As was already mentioned, how one treats animals is irrelevant of education. However, it does bother me that he doesn't have $15 or $20 to spend on the roo, because I'd worry that there's no money for feed/care of the animals. And I does bother me that he wants it for a gift, because gifts of animals to others is rarely a good idea, IMO.
However, I've given a roo away FREE to someone I felt like would give it a good home.
But when you need to get rid of a rooster, your options are often limited. Personally, I'd rather see a roo eaten than placed in bad situation.
