or will they not start laying until next spring?

we're going on a vacation in May, so I didn't think it would be wise to get the chicks now.

most likely not unless your hens are very good for laying in the winter months...because hens start laying at around 18-20 weeks of age and most lay a very little amount or none in the winter...and since your chicks will be at the laying age in the winter months and it will be there fist time laying I would say no they will not lay...you will have to wait until next spring.

OK, that is what I thought. GRR. LOL! hmmm. Now, if I got them next week or this weekend, they wouldn't have enough time before our vacation may 12th to be outside, correct?

I have 5 other chickens already, so they'd be with them. (have to get them used to each other and all that jazz) IDK, I don't think it can be done. they'd only be 7 weeks old.. no outside until at least 8 right? (they'd share the coop... but I could maybe section off a place for them only, but it is sketchy.

My chicks born last June started laying the day after Christmas, she was an EE. The rest waited until Jan and first of Feb. I'm in Alabama, so I'm sure it's different, but I moved my babies out 2 weeks ago and they were 5 weeks. They do have their own place though. They are now 7 weeks and "they" are babysitting my hurt 40 week old WL and doing a very good job! Good luck with yours!

Considering Alabama summer this year started in February and our winter probably won't start until mid November...

Move to Alabama :)

This year always proves my Four seasons of the South.

Almost Summer, Summer, Still Summer, and Christmas.
