Thanks I appreciate this.... And I will be the first to admit that the first post did sound awful and yes I need to ease off on my over use of the term lol haha but I was just venting not even asking for others opinion on the situation so thank you..... I hate loosing birds as well and I believe everything is under control now haha.....

it's happened to me before. if you lose a chick and don't make a 4 page post with a lot of sobbing and crying then you'll get a few sanctimonious "you should find another hobby" posts. eh, it IS the internet after all.

I am sorry to everyone if I made my post sound as awful as it did.... The door incident was one incident where the coop door had fallen off of the hinge and landed on about four chicks at once whom all died. That situation is fixed now..... The guineas broken leg now that is a helpless situation, one of my guineas got stuck in my neighbors fence and twisted its leg at the joint.... I cleaned the wound and splinted it along with daily cleanings, after about 4 days the leg turned green and started to smell so we put it out of its misery...... And as far as the broken neck issue yes the same thing happened to me as it did you 6of6chicks except I didn't find it till the next time I went out to the pen....... So to EVERYONE who was saying how terrible of a chick owner I am and how careless I am you are wrong...... I love all of my animals and hate to lose any but as I am getting started I am also learning, so before you jump all over someone why don't you ask questions and get your facts straight..... This website is not for gossip or for fighting it is for positive insight and getting to know and learn about others experiences...... So yes I do apologize for misleading everyone but don't get rude about it no one is perfect..... Have a nice day........

Well, I'm not sure who "EVERYONE" is, but I simply said it was awful to joke about chicks being squashed by doors. In my case it was an accident that I didn't even realize could happen, and thankfully my chick was okay. It was entirely my fault, but I chose to learn from the experience and make sure it never happens again. That's all I was trying to say.

I'm brand new too and have made a TON of mistakes. I'm outside today re-doing my perches for the THIRD time because I still can't seem to get it right. So I can understand your frustration, believe me! It seems like there are so many things you have to know all at once when you get chickens because NOT knowing might mean one of your chickens could end up dead. It's very stressful. I'm really sorry you've had a rough time so far, and I'm sorry that you felt attacked. But if you re-read your original post it does come across as if you were joking about all of your dead chickens. Maybe it would have helped if you had explained the circumstances up front rather than expecting people to ask for details.

I hope your run of bad luck ends and that keeping chickens becomes more enjoyable for you!

If you are losing chickens in large numbers maybe you need to re think things.

Not trying to be harsh but do want to help.

May think about the coop and run set up.to keep them safer. Or if free ranging maybe letting them out only when you can keep an eye out for them.

Raising chickens take's time and thought.

The first step in splinting is to remove all the feathers over the fracture site. Plucking them allows them to grow back faster compared to cutting them. You can see the bruising that is apparent on this birds leg directly over the fracture. Birds routinely show bruising of many colors, which is sometimes misinterpreted as gangrene by inexperienced people.​

The picture above is for small birds, but it should help one come up with a proper solution for a larger bird.

Remember that in animals it's important to immobilize the joints above and below the fracture.
