We just started with chickens this year and are all already in love! We've got a multiple-breed flock of layers, and I like each breed for a different reason. I like our little WL, Rosie, because she is too funny and irritates the life out of our neighbor's dog, who can not get anywhere near her. I love our SLW and GLW because they are beautiful. Our BAs are sweet and have the most beautiful green sheen to their feathers. Our RIRs are so social and chatty, and the BOs are so good at organic pest-removal from our garden.
The husband and I are thinking of keeping these girls (they are not for the stew pot, expect, perhaps, for the surprise BO roo, if he gets nasty when he's older), but adding a flock of one breed exclusively for breeding/hatching, selling chicks and eggs (not really to make money, just because it would be fun). Husband wants to get something rare, so we can help others be able to find eggs and chicks. I sort of want to get one of the old standard breeds that is on the endangered list.
So, if you had a choice, which breed would you choose?
