If you have a dog.....

My son has a boxer, Sadie who I believe would be great with my girls. They try to peck her nose & tail every time she is around the pen. When the girls were a couple of days old, I tried to introduce her to one. She so gently opened her mouth, expecting me to give her a new squeak toy. NOT.

On the other hand, our shepard/husky mix is very aggressive & the girls run in their coop when he is around. He is why I will not free range. I am so scared that someone will let him out of the house. I won't even open their pen/coop if he is outside.

I have five dogs:

Lillybelle= a bloodhound- loves to mother the chicks, loves to chase the chickens, I am not sure whether her intent is to hurt them but she weighs 110 lbs so I keep her away.

Buster- a Boxer- afraid of the geese buy loves to run at the chickens and make them scatter- I keep him away

Earnhardt- a Bassett- too lazy to chase anything except the couch- him I trust.

Earl and Jack- Jack Russell Terriers- both afraid of the chickens as a result of being jumped by my Roo, due to the fiesty nature of their breed I still don't trust them.

All of my dogs have been raised with a Macaw and a Cuckatoo so they are used to birds. Chickens run and a dog's instinct is to chase, no matter what breed.

my dog (a border collie X) is fine with the chickens that we have now. when she was a puppy, she tried herding some of our hens, not to hurt them, but just the border collie in her. she's fine with them now-she is very big on making her mommy the treat-giver happy:)

This is Duke. He is a 13 year old German Shepherd/Malmute cross. I rescued him 3 years ago.
He loves baby ducks. Herds them around and protects them all day long.

i have a lab weieriner and afull blooded weieriner and that both will eat any chicken that gets out of the pen.
I had to put small wire on thr bottom of all the fences to keep the birds from sticking there hwads out and getting wacked.

we have a 3 yr old chocolate lab that would love chicken for dinner. NO! we can not let the dog hang with our girls. we have a fence between the chicken run andthe darn dog!! totally sucks. If we'd known chickens were so cool we would have skipped the dog!!!
