If you live close to a store that sells chickens...

Count yourself lucky (pun intended

) At my local Rural King the minimum is 25!

Agreed. Ours also has a minimum of 6 but I talked to the manager and explained I already have chickens and don't need 6 more. She let me get just two.

I am really hoping to get just 2 or 3 to grow out with the ones I hope to hatch in 2 weeks. I don't have astrolorps and i tried to time the hatching to match when the chicks would arrive in the store.
I think PA has a state law requiring the sale minimum of 6. if I have to take 6, I will. What's a few more?

The two feed stores around here would let you buy one chick if you wanted, but that would be bad (for the solo chick). No minimum.

And, apparently, no maximum, either. If the chicks of a particular breed sell out, they're just out of 'em until the next chick delivery day. My favorite feed store has at least 10 troughs of chicks; hens and roosters separated, and a couple of straight run troughs. If there is an obvious difference between breeds at the chick stage, they may have two different breeds in the same trough.

If I had property of my own, I could easily walk in and purchase hundreds of chicks on a single visit.

But most of the fun is selecting which chick or two I want out of this or that trough.

the TSC in the central pa area refuses to seel less then 6 for fear of the chicks getting too cold with fewer chicks.

I feel very blessed to have a family run agriculture store near where I live. They are having a chicken "seminar" on March 27 that is free to anyone who would like to learn more about chickens. When I called to RSVP the gentleman I spoke to was absolutely wonderful. He has been around chickens his entire life and spent 15 minutes on the phone with me just answering questions and providing me with interesting tidbits of information. When I asked what type of chicks they would have this year, he said they get a variety, but if there was a particular breed or mix that I would like, they would be more than willing to help me get them. He even said that they would put my special order in with their order so that I would pay less and not need to buy a large quantity of chicks. I have been buying dog food and other items from this store for years, and I wish everyone had a place like this to go.

There are some states and counties which require the minimum purchase number to avoid easter chick impulse buys. It may not be the store's rule, but rather a larger bodies rule.
