Illinois...

Hi! I'm from Columbia, IL, about 20 minutes from St. Louis. Just joined BYC a couple days ago.

What kind of chickens do you have.

I looped in DW and even DS to help make a batch of homemade sausage. We ground a bunch of pork two days ago, drained it and let it marinade in the fridge. Then we stuffed it into natural casing today. We packaged a lot of it for the freezer, but I put a good amount on the smoker too. It's actually still out there right now so I guess it's time to throw a movie on and pass some time until I have to go pull them off.

I gave my 2 Poish Hens haircuts today. They were wet raggedy looking on the hairdos. Every time they would get a drink, they would mop up a bunch of water from the bowl. Now they can even see better since the head feathers are not covering their eyes like before.
I also slipped in the Japanese Bantie into the loft. Separated by a screen divider for a few days. Has her own water and combination of feed, and scratch all to herself:)

I've got a big mixed flock of Polish, Rhode Island Reds, Buff Orpington, Plymouth Rock, Ameraucana, Wyandottes, Sussex, Araucana, Legbar and some more but its a long list. I've also got two turkeys, three ducks, and six guinea fowl and I'm hoping to add some quail soon just trying to figure out the logistics and create their little area.

What variety of turkeys do you have?

I have calico and semi colored Narragansett... basically mutts since they don't breed true. Although this hatch getting some close to sweetgrass

Making sausage sounds like an interesting and fun project. Was is hard? How did you learn?

Well, i was going to take some pictures of my fluff butts, but as usual, life has different things in store. After I did my boys 2 day pontiac tournament, I spent all day Sunday doing the resulting laundry. Monday, I felt drained at work, which I thought was from the busy weekend. I was wrong. I started coughing a little that night and by the end of work yesterday, i was about to scream I hurt so bad. Came home to a fever. Only two possibilities. Either flu or pneumonia even though I suspected the latter. Unfortunately my suspicions were correct. Yay. Just in time for Christmas. Doc wants me to "rest, rest, rest!" I barely have any Christmas presents!:barnie If i still have a fever on Monday, I have to go back. :hit

So fluffy butt pics will have to wait until i feel better. Its really hard to go outside in this cold with a fever!:he
