Illinois...

I said I would get more pics of the coop clean out. While it still needs some tidying up, here's pics of what it looks like right now. Aside from some boxes of tools and the saw that need to get moved to the garage along with some general organization, it's just about ready for Spring. Although Spring is 2 months away, preparing early cannot hurt and makes me feel like it's nearly here - being hopeful and proactive never hurt.

Also, @Molpet a brown turkey you gave us is in the first pic and next to it is the cornish cross we hatched from your eggs. The calico turkey was outside the window and apparently couldn't find her way into the coop again - not the brightest bird.

@BReeder!
Shed/coop is looking good. You're a busy fellow!

I love how content & fluffy your blue SLO looks. Is she 'meaty' or all fluff?

Greetings my fellow taxed to death illinoisans. The first few pages were filled with central and southern folks and I'm glad to find people in my area finally. I'm in the Plainfield/Joliet area.
:welcome
Yes, there are a lot of us from the Chicago suburbs. What kinds of chickens (or other poultry) do you have?

Ha they are silly. They think if they can see where they want to go, they should be able to go through it.

I would say she's mostly fluff. The Brahmas are far meatier and less fluffy, yet look about the same size. LOL.
Is it terrible that I'd live to set an Orp soaking wet? It would be like deflating a balloon. :gig

The balloon analogy is spot on. When broody, they fluff up and look like hot air balloons. When wet, it's similar to wet dogs. We bath ours in the heat of summer - both for cleaning & cooling effects. It's nice to let them air dry. I'll have to take some pics next time.

When poor 'Dinner' tangled with the jake and ended up in the plucker, the plucker jammed up from all that poof. Usually I can do 2-4 chickens or a turkey before it jams up from feathers

Thanks for the greetings everyone.
A dozen egg layers. 4 gold comets, 3 black australorp (1 is a roo), 2 RIR, 1 gold wyandotte, and 1 old buff orp from my last flock.
They are definitely pets. Wife would never eat again if I tried to feed her one of our birds. She won't even eat the eggs because she knows where they come from. Her loss. Thinking about hatching some chicks in spring if we ever have it.

BTW I've always heard about orp being all feathers and fluff but I think they're lying to me. My old hen likes to be left alone, she was mostly raised by neighbor. I finally went to pick her up and much to my surprise she is all meat.
Plainfield, that's me. Just north of downtown.
Welcome to the group!
I am behind the mall. Kids used to walk to the mall.
