Illinois...

Today I went by my chickens,,,, and cant find Lonely:(,,, so I start looking around for her everywhere. I find her sitting in my bale of hay. I knew she was sitting in a chicken made nest there. After a short time, I hear the egg song,,:yesss:,, so went and took the egg still warm.

Hard to imagine such a small body producing relatively large projectile.:old

Today's harvest. Lonelys' egg is the smallest on right. It is round in this pix, but only because of the angle I had best exposure.

Such a cute little egg! Congrats to Lonely.

Maybe if you collect he eggs for a whole week you can make an egg sandwich! ;)

I set some eggs last night,....... wondering what I'll do if they all hatch.

This morning, I noticed a little serama (named Sesame) flattened in the nest box, doing the broody growl.
:celebrate

Great timing! If she follows through and stays broody, she'll adopt my batch of incubator chicks! It's great when the little hens go broody because I can just set up a big chick brooder and then add the hen.

I was kind of hoping it would be "Cookie" but maybe she'll be ready when we hatch some turkey poults.

Hello! I am reintroducing myself. I was active a few years ago before life for crazy for us. We had gotten 6 girls which ended up being 12 before summers end. I got a lot of great advice and encouragement here. I took a step back when our three year old was born super prematurely. We kept up with our chickens actual care but beyond that was too much. Over the last couple of years we had lost some of our flock. The girl in my avatar actually was my first loss to a predator. One of my polish girls had vent prolapse happen...

We finally decided it was time to add some more chickens back in especially since the original girls are slowing down some. In January I received 8 chicks from mpc. I got sucked in by the silked white Easter eggers 😂 I got two of them, a bcm, an olive egger, an australorp, a white egg layer, and two mystery rare breeds. After several weeks looking at pictures and watching them grow we determined the white egg layer is an Andalusian, the two mystery rare breeds are a lavender Orpington and a cream legbar. Unfortunately the Andalusian is definitely a cockerel. He’s got the funniest little crow and is already beautifully iridescent. I’m not supposed to have roosters so I’m going to be looking for a home for him. Everyone else though is looking really good. The silked Easter eggers are like cotton balls on legs which I love. The olive egger has a crest that it’s quite as big as the cream legbar. The australorp is the sweetest calmes bird. And the bcm is in a close second. I’m sad my egg basket won’t have any white, but might do another tiny round of chicks later this year especially if we have any more losses. Any suggestions of what white egg layers do best around here? (I’m in mchenry). Any way I’m glad to be back and if anyone wants a cockerel let me know 😂

pic is the new girls upon their arrival.

I remember you here long ago when you were active. Glad to hear your 3 year old will be enjoying your pet chickens. You got a great assortment. :thumbsup . If you want some white egg layers, White leghorns are top of list. I think the Australorp lays white also.:idunno
The Andalusians are nice chickens. Wish I had a hen.
Faraday will be hatching White leghorns, so maybe get some from her.

WELCOME BACK,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,:highfive:

Welcome back @megpie021

Congrats on the new chicks!

My son will be hatching some Leghorn eggs the 1st week of May. (eggs to be set on April 13) The eggs are via 4H (U of I extension). We do not breed Leghorns, so I cannot comment on their quality. We kept one female from his first hatch (3 years ago), and then a second one the next year. Both "Tillie" and "Millie" are amazing layers. Min egg order was 2 doz, so we'll have extras.

I'm setting my eggs tonight for the easter egg hatch. At least 5 duck eggs in one incubator (i know they wont hatch before easter, but she just started laying). 6-8 orp eggs, 3 spitz eggs, 3 ee eggs, and a bunch of filler serama eggs. I hope folks want chicks in 3 weeks!

Let me know if anyone wants any eggs for hatching. @BReeder! Let me know if you want to try welsh harlequins. They really are gorgeous birds and they're sexable at hatch!

Maybe... I need to wait to see what we get with our half dozen Rouens. If there's excess males, I'll have room for a few Welsh. I don't want more than 6 adult ducks (not counting anything we grow out for the freezer) at once though because of space so we need to be picky.
