Illinois...

Well they have been isolated since hatch and have been down in the basement. I have my little girl in her own brooder with a heating pad underneath the brooder and she is in a donut shaped towel to keep her from falling over. I think she is having some kind of seizure once in a while. I noticed it 3 times so far, once while she was just sitting still and twice while I was feeding her and giving her water. It looks like she is pecking, but when she was drinking it was so strong she almost put her whole face in the water. Thinking back, during and after I took off the rubberband for her splayed leg, she was doing a lot of walking backwards. Like she was dizzy or off balance. So maybe she just wasn't right at hatch, but I didn't notice because of the splayed leg. She did get trampled and jumped on by her 2 siblings, before, during and after the splayed leg issue. But no matter what, those chicks will be in isolation for another month at least. The more I read and think about it, the less I think its Marecks, but still watching just in case.
Since you have some very precious chicken, I would recommend that in the interest of their well being as well as for your peace of mind, you should have her put down and get a necropsy done. If you don't know of a vet that does that, I can get you couple of contacts. With the precious breeds you have, it will be well worth the expense.

Thanks Junibutt, I totally agree. I just heard of the ACV vet hospital in palos is seeing chickens now. So I figured I would give her a little more time before calling. If she continues to fail, it needs to be done for my own piece of mind and for the others sake.

How are your chicks doing?

Now that I have officially started to offer some chickens for sale, the biele pullet eggs are increasing to large size & my molting hens are starting to lay again. UGH! It's hard enough for me to rehome my pet chickens, but the bump in production makes me question the keepers all over again!

Besides the chickens, there's been a lot going on here. My Sis in law was here for a visit & got to take the kids trick-or-treating.
Elf & Elephant

After she returned to FL & the house became quiet, I started crying my eyes out. My mom passed away in April and I'm still not over it. This was the 1st year that I didn't get a "goodie bag" from my mom. (I'm over 40 & she always insisted b/c I'll always be her little girl.)

Our poor dog started coughing, so I took him to the vet. It's just a cold (probably irritated by all the barking at the doorbells). While there I showed the vet a small lump on his leg. She looked at a few cells under the microscope & it's cancer (a mast tumor). Not looking forward to what's ahead. We don't have the money for a surgery, so the best we can do is make him comfortable. At least he's not bothered by it yet. Still acts like a puppy & even caught 2 rabbits last week.

That's so sad to hear I'm not sure if I've asked already or not but I'm always interested to hear about chicks for sale and specially for rehome certainly if it's to help with a dogs vet bill

Here's another pic of our sweet boy. He's a mutt that we got from a shelter. Wonderfully patient with kids & always ready to play. He sleeps right outside the kids' rooms.

He loves being outside, playing fetch, chasing squirrels, catching bunnies, & eating chicken pop.

(He's far from perfect....) To us, he's just part of the family.

I just read about your chick walking backwards. I had a Black Australorp do the something similar when I switched their feed from starter to grower and then went back to starter (because it was on sale). It was like she was having a 'fit' of sorts but looked and acted fine when calm.

@Faraday40
Praying for you and your family. Please let me know if there's anything I can do. Also I'm sending you all the hugs I can. We lost my first house cat and my baby girl to cancer this summer please message or call me any time. Sadly Cassie was too ill to be saved. She had a massive tumor in her abdomen. We only knew for four days before she was suffering and we had to make that hard decision. How much would his surgery/treatment be?

@Faraday40 My little splash chick is still hanging on even though she still isn't walking. I don't know what is going on with her. I have tried many things that were recommended, but to no avail. All the other chicks are growing like weeds. The 2 other splash orps are twice the size of their little lame sibling. and the blue isbars are a very active breed, and fast. I have a tough time even trying to catch them in their brooder.

@Pixie I have switched back to the organic feed for the chicks and am fermenting it again. I don't know if it was because of the medicated feed or not, but switched back anyway. Hope your chick is ok.

The Hawks are double teaming the chickens. Its a mother/daughter or son team and am getting fed up with them. My broody is doing a great job with the cochin bantam chicks. They are all out all the time and even join in at morning feeding time without a problem, even though I give them their own food, they still go over and eat with mom and all the big guys. Tonight is also the first nite for everyone in the new coop, except for momma and chicks, I still have to set up their little safe area.

Faraday I am so sorry to hear about you handsome pup.

Deer netting over the runs or area seems to deter all flying creatures in my area.. Sept the little tiny birds who find the gaps to eat the flys and feed left over
