Illinois...

I have ALL mutts, so it would not matter, and don't want any roos. I don;t have an avenue to rehoming those. The auto sexing would sure be only way for me, especially if I would get that 288 capacity unit.

BTW my Japanese bantam Efiteris is in chicken heaven. Suspect old age, since I bought her used.

Oh no, so sorry to hear that. At least she had a good long life.

.
That is the thing about the auto sexing, what do you do with all the roos? Everyone wants the pullets, but then you have all the cockerels. I still have my splash roo that was picked on so bad by one of my hens that I rehomed. Once she drew blood on his leg, she just kept on pecking until I found him. He has a bad limp, stays in the coop, doesn't crow. I can't sell him, and won't butcher him. So he eats and hangs out in the coop and will be there until he goes on his own. Unfortunately, I can't do that with all the roos.

Yes, that is a problem with roosters. The reality is that about 50% hatch and raising those to table value is not cost effective with most except the broiler variety. I'm sure you know the unspoken methods hatcheries are utilizing,

For many breeders they only sell in pairs or trios that contain a rooster... I have even encountered this at animal shows, where they force you to buy roosters or charge extra if you don't take the rooster...

That was the running joke on my first bantam rooster, we called him 'The $5 Rooster' as a nickname as the seller only sold in pairs and wanted $20 for each pullet ($40 for a pullet pair), or we could take a roo/hen pair for $15, thus the rooster saved us $5 off the single pullet purchase... And he turned out to be a great rooster, even as a bantam he was the alpha until he passed while we were on vacation last year...

On another note, I know I should be waiting longer for my White Sport CL to get egg making down a little better vs grabbing her first eggs and trying to incubate, but I really want to get a jump on hatching her offspring...

I set 5 of her eggs last week and ended up with 4 duds on candling last night, only one is viable hoping it goes all the way... Set 3 more last night, going to see how that goes in a week... If I get a high percentage of duds I might be forced to hold wait a few more weeks and try again...

A few times already at Kankakee swap, I negotiated to buy the pair and only took the hen. Paid full price and told seller that I WAS NOT ABLE TO KEEP ROOSTERS. They were understanding and probably took roos and ate them at home. Realities of farm life.

I am going to sell chicks straight run since I have my new roo. But with my roo AL, my project SL, I am getting silver laced pullets and gold laced cockerels. I can't sell those in pairs or trios. Cavemanrich and I were saying its fantastic auto sexing, but I would be stuck with a lot of boys. SO going with the new cockerel, and will sell them straight run, pairs or trios.

Grumble, grumble...

Just returned home from the feed store to see a flippin' coyote walking my pasture's fence line anticipating and looking for the opportunity to jump in, all in full daylight at 3 o'clock!

The goats had retreated to the barn and the llamas had taken up defensive positions at the barn entrance, so all are safe, but it appears I need to have the firearms at hand once again to take care of the problem, as it took far too long to get them in hand and ready today...

And the coyote pretty much showed no fear even even as I approached, he/she just casually strolled away from me, with only a sidearm in hand there was no opportunity for me to take care of it this time as it kept just far enough out of range...
