Don't you love the drama!@Molpet
How is your crazy winter broody hen doing?
My "Cookie" crumbled. Last week when I was teaching, she got off the nest & when I returned home, the eggs were cold. I put her back on & found her off the nest again on Thurs. morning. I've been returning her to the nest & thought things were going OK. Over the weekend, I candled & removed 2 eggs that looked under-developed - still hoping the remaining 3 are alive. This morning Cookie was off the nest again.
I decided to let Cookie be & see if she would go back to the nest on her own. What happened was that DD's silkie jumped into the nest. She has been sitting there ever since. I re-candled this evening & we saw movement in one (maybe 2) eggs. This silkie hatched April 15th, only laid about 6-8 eggs, & now she's broody. Silly, silly chicken. (Actually, she's been acting broody for a couple days, but I didn't think much of it.)
So much drama in the coop today!
13 eggs!Don't you love the drama!
she is still getting off at the coldest part of the day and going back.. still has 13 eggs... I haven't candled them.. I'll just see what hatches LOL
Glad you have a back up broody... mine are due Sunday so hopefully she will hang in there.. She was hatched in my incubator April 16th 2017 and her mom was either a BR or BJG and the dad an unknown mixed I got for free (to see if I really wanted chickens again and if the dog could be trained to behave)
she covered 16 well, but I figured 12 was good, and I gave her an extra... lots of mine will kick one out they do not like the first 24 hrs.. usually it has a meat spot or something else wrong with it... she didn't kick any out.13 eggs!
She must be giant!
Mine are bantams trying to cover LF eggs, so only 4-5 eggs were set due to winter and up to 7/8 can be set if the weather's warm. The bantam orp has a great "spread" but the silkie who's now taken over is smaller.
I think I'm the one who's really broody. I have some very nice eggs collected from my best hens - just sitting on the counter in case I "need" them. (Before the silkie took over the current eggs, I started collecting some.) I even thought about digging out the incubator in case the broodys' eggs don't hatch. (Yeah, like I really need chicks in Dec.) Perhaps the cold weather will make me come to my senses like it does for the hens.
Must not set eggs....Must not set eggs....There's a real reason why I must put the incubators into storage in August.
