Illinois...

I have some peeping going on under my first time pullet... :celebrate
they were due tomorrow and with her getting off at the coldest part of the morning I thought they would be late...

I have a nari tom w/crooked toes that I 'should' process soon... will see if I get to it before winter :hmm..
The feathers get wet scalding.. can I dry them in a pillowcase in the dryer or air dry flat? and be usable for you? Which feathers do you want? I can try pulling some before scalding.. The tail feathers are rather raggy from them strutting against the fence...not many feathers in the yard.. chipmunks took them for bedding LOL

Hahaha. Here, the little birds & squirrels are also making nests & we often find our chicken feathers several blocks away. I really wish the critters would also relocate all our leaves!

sent you a PM

on leaves are good...leaves go in the run for deep litter. ha I go to town on garbage day and fill the back of the truck w/bags of leaves a couple times... stuff the coops full, stash a truck load under a lean to and under tarp w/ weights... take a few bags into the basement for deep snow when I can't get to a stash. ... shovel the snow in the poultry yard, throw a bag of leaves down and happy birds

@Molpet Please share your pics when you see the chicks.

I candled tonight & all 3 eggs looked OK (almost all shadow in 2 eggs, & the 3rd had a tiny bit of space at the bottom.) I believe that's more development than we saw last time we checked. Last time I thought the 3rd egg might be dead b/c it was smaller. It's definitely bigger than it was a week ago. Perhaps it's sitting on the edge of the hen's spread.

More good news: the temps should be mild this week.

Hello my friends

@Faraday40 sorry I missed your call Friday we were up at my uncle's with him after the services. I'm very glad we went, he needed Mike and I.

Yesterday was the service at the cemetery and it was beautiful. The 21 gun salute and seeing the man salute my Grandpa's casket was so amazing. That's an honor he definitely deserved.

Yesterday evening all the family went to Grandma's for food and to be together. Naturally there was some drama and tears and unpleasant stuff too. I love my Grandpa and family it's amazing how we can be so very very close. I'm still scared for the future and dreading the holidays. I'm worried about my Mom and Grandma and just trying to hold it together for them.

@Faraday40 there are at least 3 that have hatched yesterday and maybe are 6 altogether today . Here are 2 we can see in front of her

Both her and I are not the greatest chick moms..but we will do :old
I heard mildly upset peeping yesterday, but couldn't see a chick.. checked later and the peeping was more distressed, but not critical... her box has a pull out tray and a kitty litter pan on it... it is on the ground under a couple of 2x4s and I didn't notice before the kitty pan was pulled forward... a blk(BR or BJG mix) and a yellow(cx mix?) chicks had gotten between the pan and the back of the nestbox...
She was blocking the view  and I should have seen it when she had been off the nest.
..Glad I took the chance to disturb her, the yellow chick was cold, but latter I seen 2 yellows looking out happy .. hopefully no harm was done to the other eggs. She didn't get off when I pulled it out but lifted up.. glad she was my tamest hen and didn't bolt. I guess she needs a name now LOL
the hen is in a metal section of a taken apart shelter kennel, the kind that has several big and 5 smaller boxes bolted together, and a door with vertical bars. I bought the 5 cheep from a disbanded shelter.. a rabbit guy got the bigs... . makes a nice nest box and the doors come off/on easily to lock a bully up or a broody in..

The 21 gun salute sounded great (and appropriate for your grandpa). I really wanted to drive up to be there, but DD's schedule didn't allow it. I'm glad you are able to spend this time with family. Yes, the holidays are difficult, but you are strong. Your family will mourn the loss & pull together.

Congrats! Considering all the factors, that's a decent hatch.

Hoping I get 1-2 chicks from my 3 eggs. No peeping yet. Due tomorrow, but could be greatly delayed from so much time off the nest. (Plus the change in hens. LOL)

Today's day 21 & no pips or peeping yet.

Meanwhile...... The joys of being a kid:

DH brought home a stack of left over wrapping paper from an office move. The kids quickly put it to good use with all sorts of fun posters & crafts.

Also, on Sat night we went to our town's Christmas season kick off. They have a night parade, lighting of the Christmas tree, free cookies & hot cocoa, visits with Santa, pet the reindeer, and all sorts of music. DD was playing in her school's chime choir.
