Illinois...

I have a bantam broody that's been sitting on eggs for almost 2 weeks and my legbar joined her in the nesting box 2 days ago. I was thinking of trying to slip the 3 chicks I got from Junibutt under the bantam and move remaining eggs to the legbar. Anyone have advice or since @Faraday40 has done this, any advice? Yay or Nay

Update: Tried to slip a chick under the broody bantam tonite, and it was a no go. She pecked at her 4 times and I pulled her. Oh well, I guess they will be with me for a bit more.
The easiest way to slip a chick under a hen is right after she hatches an egg. On that 1st day or two, she'll accept anything that peeps. I think the hen goes through a change in hormones when she feels an egg hatch under her body. Perhaps when the chick pips & the hen hears the peeping it triggers her incubation instinct off & her mothering instinct on. After the 1st few days, a protective hen may view an extra chick as a threat or she may adopt it. It really depends on the hen.

I never successfully added a chick to a hen who's in the setting period, but I know some people have. I think the hen needs at least a little time on eggs before adding a chick. When I tried it (during the day) a chick popped out from under the broody & she pecked at it. I believe that she felt the chicks should still be in the egg &/or keeping warm under her - not running around. The chick's actions probably confused her, so she disciplined it.

When other people have done it successfully, they add the chicks at night when the hen is sleeping & the chicks are less likely to run around & confuse the broody. The people check in on their broody several times before going to bed. By morning the chickens wake up together & assume that they've always been together. As with most things it may also depend on the hen.

Congrats on your 1st of many little eggs!
:thumbsup
It's a big joyful event, that never grows old, and only other chicken people really understand. All the work through the incubation, chick & pullet stages finally pays off. Your baby has finally grown up, and you almost feel like you made the egg yourself!

I took all kinds of pics like:
Hen in the nest box
DD gathering the egg
Pic of egg next to the chicken
Pic of the egg inside our little egg basket
pic of egg next to my last doz store eggs
pic of egg yolk next to a store egg yolk
pic of the egg(s) being cooked
etc. I think you get the idea.

Of course you'll go through that same sense of pride for every new pullet, and soon you'll be checking the nest boxes a couple times per day to see what presents the gals have made you.

Your family may think you're nuts, but that's all part of the fun.
Again congrats!

I didnt get much chance to take too many pictures as husband was like lets eat it! so we did haha. Next time. I really almost didnt believe it when I opened the nesting box and saw it right next to the ceramic one.

Chicago Clucker thanks again for the hatching eggs, finally got my result today.
It was truly magical how, last week, my Swedish flower hen decided to go broody. She's being a good mom!
CONGRATS :weeLucky you! New chick and broody mama to do the work! Such a cutie pie.

Its for sure Peaches laying! I caught her late this morning in the nesting box! This egg is already a little bit bigger. And 2nd day in a row! Now that she has gotten the shells right I think she may be a rock star! (I know she is a hybrid and supposed to be a laying machine, but still I am giving her credit)
